Hoby Irwin thought he was hearing fireworks in his Porter Creek neighbourhood last Friday night.

When he left his condo to investigate, he found a man bleeding on the ground, and a minivan “laying rubber in a hurry to get out of there.”

A week later, RCMP are still investigating Whitehorse’s first homicide of 2016.

Police have identified the victim as 32-year old Whitehorse resident Matthew Devellano.

They have asked the public for any information related to the crime, including any tips on the dark-coloured, older-style van that disappeared from the scene.

At this point, 30 officers have interviewed roughly 60 witnesses, including Irwin, who lives in a condo on Stan McCowan Place, where the incident occurred.

Irwin told the Star this week he was inside doing housework at around 10 p.m. last Friday when the heard three pops, followed by two more.

When he walked outside and saw Devellano on the ground, he yelled to a neighbour to call 911.

Irwin was then joined by two men from a nearby house on the street.

Irwin said he believes a couple in their 30s lives in the house, and that they have barbecues and parties, but never anything wild.

“Nothing loud, nothing outrageous. They were very low-key,” he said.

Irwin said roughly 25 people came out of the house, some of them screaming after the van, “That’s the guy we kicked out!”

Others stayed by Devellano and told him to keep his eyes open, and not to go to sleep.

Irwin said police had the street blocked off until 7 p.m. last Saturday.

He said he knew at least one of his neighbours was upset at not being allowed to drive off the street, but police were treating everything on the street as part of the crime scene.

Police have issued no new statements on the case.

Major crimes, with the help of officers from various units and detachments, continue to investigate the homicide.

First, someone posted on Facebook that they were told the guy had been arrested. Second, there was video of the incident so how could they not find who did it? If the guy has been arrested why keep it from the public but tell the family? Something isn't right here.
