THE LAST ROYAL VISIT – Prince Charles (centre foreground) greets Yukoners at the SS Klondike in Whitehorse during his visit in April 2001. Hundreds of people turned out to see him.

Premier Darrell Pasloski says he’s pleased with word that Prince William and his wife, Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have accepted an invitation to briefly visit the Yukon this fall.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced the visit this morning.

The exact date, opportunities for the public to see the couple and whether they will bring their two young children, George and Charlotte, have not been released.

“I look forward to offering a warm Yukon welcome to the royal couple,” Pasloski said in a statement.

“The Commissioner of Yukon (Doug Phillips) and I have been working to confirm a royal visit to the territory, and we are thrilled about today’s announcement.

“A royal tour is a unique opportunity to showcase Yukon to the world, and I know that Yukoners will make the most of this visit.”

The couple will visit Canada at the invitation of the federal government.

“Our true Canadian pride and spirit will shine and be at the very heart of this visit so they can feel at home,” Johnston said in a statement.

A full itinerary will be released at a later date, the Governor General’s office said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement the visit will present a chance for Canadians of all background to meet with the Duke and Duchess “and learn more about our heritage, traditions, and institutions.”

It will be the couple’s second visit to Canada since getting married five years ago. In 2011, they took part in Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa.

Their first visit also took them to Montreal, Quebec City, Charlottetown, Summerside, Yellowknife, Calgary and Slave Lake after that community was ravaged by a forest fire.

The then-newlyweds drew large crowds wherever they went, including a packed Canada Day gathering on Parliament Hill.

The visit was also seen as a way to engage young Canadians with the monarchy, given the perception of waning interest compared to that of older Canadians.

The couple’s grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, visited the Yukon in the 1950s.

Prince William’s aunt, Princess Anne, visited the territory in July 1982.

His father, Prince Charles, visited Whitehorse and Mayo in April 2001.

William’s mother, Princess Diana, was killed in a high-speed traffic accident in a Paris tunnel 19 years ago next month.

Hard to believe but I actually agree with Josey Wales! (checks pulse) yup....I appear to be healthy....

The Royal family, Governor General, Lieutenant Governor and so on is such a big waste of tax payer money....and for what? A Royal visit once every 5 years? If we must have a Royal Family.....how about they at least be Canadian....sorry if that makes too much sense.

I remember photo bombing Princess Anne during her last visit to Whitehorse in the 80s. The Parade route was all set and no official vehicles coming so with me driving the Honda civic and my 2 buds in the back seat, we proceeded to drive slowly down the parade route giving the Royal wave with the little finger raised in the air type wave. Hilarious with secret service types looking on in abject horror. Them was the days.

I agree completely with Don't Worry
The Commissioner of the Yukon (who is completely unbiased and has no political attachments - he says he is completely unbiased towards any political party) BULL -I AM SURE HE WILL TURN IT INTO A YUKON PARTY OPPORTUNITY.

Why Canada is still hanging on to that old British monarchy is bewildering to me. To them we are just one of their colonies that deserve a royal visit every 5 years or so. All those royals living on that little Island in the North Atlantic living off the tax payers welfare fund. They go to the US for their shopping and fun in the sun, then its off for boring business in the colonies every few years. It's time Canadians, Australians, and NZnders smartened up and just dump them. I doubt any one of them would even notice. It would also save us millions of dollars paying for their visit and security, not to mention the gifts we give them that they throw away later. I read several years ago, someone found one in the garbage container in the Los Angeles airport after they left Canada. Of course their excuse for it was classic lie. Time for Canada to dump them and set up a parliamentary republic.

Darrell, sorry but there will be no photo-op for you with Klondike Kate and her hubby. You will be as much a part of history up here as Kate was in Dawson.

The Commissioner who at the end of the day is a good old Yukon Party Boy will do his darnedest to make sure the Pharmacist and his merry bunch of incompetence have a nice meal with the Royal couple leading to the all too important photo-op right in the middle of the election campaign. Trust me it's gonna happen.

They seem like a nice couple but the time has come to end the whole hereditary chief thing.

Fantastic more gala events we cannot afford.
There will be a cost most certainly, if not merely in yet another distraction for our nobles away from whatever they do in time etc.
Was it not the English that created all this mess we deal with daily...via revisionist history? Maybe ask them to bring their chequebook as their mess is bleeding us dry.
Ooooooooo the nobles are excited...royalty is coming.
