Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver says his party is ready to get to work

By Stephanie Waddell on October 7, 2016

Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver says his party is ready to get to work diversifying the economy, building better relationships with other governments and balancing economic and environmental interests.

“We are ready to hit the ground running the day after the election,” Silver told reporters and party supporters who gathered this morning at the Liberal headquarters for the Nov. 7 election, at the Yukon Centre Mall.

Inside the headquarters, signs for each candidate were stacked and lined up against the walls, ready to make their way to the campaign trail.

Silver – and Liberal candidates who stood behind him – was responding to the territorial election call issued this morning.

As the candidates streamed into the press conference, cheers and applause erupted among supporters. Silver paused to get a picture of the other candidates running under the Liberal banner before he headed for the podium.

“This team will engage openly and honestly with all Yukoners. It’s a strong, strong group of people,” said the Klondike MLA, citing the extensive experience of the Liberal team.

The lineup includes those who have worked in management, operated businesses, have an understanding of social issues, and more.

The Liberal party plans to run a campaign that’s positive, inclusive and responsive to Yukoners.

A territorial Liberal government would make positive changes for the territory, including restoring the relationship the territory has with other governments.

“It’s time to honour the treaties,” he said.

He stressed the need for the Yukon government, First Nations, businesses, non-governmental organizations and others to work together to improve the territory.

“We need to grow the economy,” he said, as he stressed the need for both environmental stewardship and good jobs in the territory.

Throughout his comments this morning, he was clear he believes the interests of the environment and the economy can be balanced.

The Liberals will reveal more details of their platform in the coming weeks. Silver is promising a plan that would diversify the economy and keep Yukon dollars in the territory.

“We don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket,” he later noted on diversifying the economy.

In the lead-up to the election call, the Liberals have already revealed some pieces of their platform. Those include plans to eliminate the small business corporate tax and bring the general corporate tax down to 12 per cent from the current 15 per cent. The party argues that would help businesses grow and lead to new jobs.

It also outlined plans for a federal carbon tax, noting a Liberal government would push for any money collected through the tax to make its way back into Yukoners’ pockets.

While the Yukon Party has pledged to fight any sort of federal carbon tax, the Liberals argue the territory has little influence over whether a federal tax is instituted.

There is, however, room for discussion on how the tax will work, and it is there that the Liberals will pursue seeing the funds returned to Yukoners, Silver stated in announcing the plans.

The former school teacher argued this morning the approach the Yukon Party is taking to fight with Ottawa is “antiquated,” and a move the government has taken on other matters with other governments.

The territory, he said, needs to have a plan in place to deal with issues and work with other governments on matters.

The Liberals, he said, are embracing a new, inclusive approach.

“No party has a monopoly on good ideas,” he said.

He later added it’s time to put behind the conflicts and start pulling together again for a territory where everyone can meet their potential.

“We are the change Yukon needs,” Silver said.

Alitini, McPhee and Ranj are really the only players that have some merit and none of them are in my riding! To do....... To do...... get on finalizing your platform and let us have a look, you want to form government a poor way of illustrating that the government in waiting is ready!

oh and BTW, not one candidate has been to my door!

Re: "The mistakes the liberals are making"
I don't think it really is the case that the liberals haven't prepared themselves to talk to people at their doors. My sense is they have devoted a lot of time to their packaging for election but I suspect it is more an issue of who they have attracted as individuals to run as candidates. On the surface they look good as many have commented but self interest is unfortunately a common denominator for too many. I just hope we don't have to learn that the hard way.

Pissed that platform has not been completed, a couple weeks? WTF! How can you analyze, dissect and draw a conclusion on what will be best for my family and our Yukon?! You only had a year plus to figure this out.

In terms of candidates and some of the comments, yikes can you imagine if some of these players get a post. Several are self-serving (look at thier professional careers), some have run organizations into the ground, some have no clue, with next to no experience in public office, and the others..... well the jury is out.

Pay attention Silver, your seat doesn't appear to be as safe as you might think it is! Let the games begin........ we may all be in trouble.

homes is great for the YP and NDP. Liberal or NDP had no coaching on how to be a candidate. That will be their down fall.
It is one thing to put a team together and another to win.
Liberals are not prepared for the election.

Sigh, Remember when good old Trudeau said, he was going to tax the 1% to achieve all his promises? Well the 1% didn't get wealthy by giving their dollars away. So, now to achieve his promises, Mr. Trudeau has a tax that will be paid by everyone.

People who honestly believe that this tax is going to come back to the Yukoners are daft. The tax will increase the cost of basic things, so those on minimum wage cannot afford to buy said things, which in-turn will cause an increase in minimum wage which will cause a further increase in the prices of goods.

Sigh, not sure why the Yukon should care anyways, the rest of Canada supports our sorry welfare butts!

Sandy managed to make a lot of big mistakes and as one former on Oct 11, 2016 at 3:17 pm

liberal stated, you are going to pay for that by voters who do not trust you. Words are one thing but actions are everything. Carbon tax as high as 30% in the Yukon. That is the worse this Country has seen.

Carbon pricing is going to happen. We signed on to these agreements and we, Canada, have dithered and done nothing.
So, we can whine, complain and pout, or, we can be proactive and come up with Carbon pricing that works for us. The money's collected are supposed to be returned to the provinces, so in our case, how about cutting our income tax in half? The average Yukoner would then see an overall decrease in their taxes even with Carbon pricing.

NoCarbonTax gets My Vote on Oct 9, 2016 at 3:51 pm

About half of the carbon released into the atmosphere by human activities comes from Asia where factories are churning out cheap solar panels, wind turbines, and all the other disposable consumer goods we love to buy at MalWart. Those factories are burning dirty coal and spewing the pollution into the air and water and across the land.

If the 'carbon tax' was actually about significantly reducing 'carbon emissions', then it would be applied to products imported from countries that cause the most 'carbon emissions' wouldn't it? That would give countries with strong environmental regulations a market advantage.

Because of those strong environmental regulations Canadian oil and gas provides energy with only a fraction of the pollution caused by Asian coal. Using less Canadian petroleum and buying cheap solar panels and wind turbines from Asia is counterproductive and actually increases those global GHG emissions that some people believe cause the weather to change.

The CarbonTax is a Canadian fuel tax surcharge. It's a tax grab that won't reduce GHG emissions. It's a perfect example of Verschlimmbesserung -- the German word for "improvement that makes things worse".

The CarbonTax is a foolish exercise much like a farmer choking chickens to increase egg production.

I've never been so optimistic about such a strong, qualified team as that which the Liberals have fielded. If you have great candidates you get great policy and ideas which have been sadly lacking in the legislature for too long. A direct line of connectivity to those that hold the purse strings and approve or not projects never hurt any Territorial party either.
Now we have to concentrate on getting the Liberal vote out by making a commitment to find out where your polling station is, having a ride, swapping babysitting with a neighbor, recording your favorite TV program on your PVR and helping those so that they can help you.
Finally on this great weekend of thanks, I am so thankful to have such a great choice of Liberal candidates to vote for. It's kind of like going with Team Canada. The Federal Liberals just added 67,000 new jobs in September and it won't stop there with all the major countries liking and meeting with our PM to make trade happen. Go Liberals!

@nile You don't want to lose hard earned money. I ask you to consider the difference in candidates then and now. Say Don Roberts vs Jeane Lassen for instance. I believe we are talking integrity here.
@ June Jackson - Who do you think your fooling. You don't like the NDP party but you trip over yourself giving their candidates unjustified glowing reports at every turn, NDP are nice people but we want something to happen in the Territory not committees to decide what committees we should have. Liberals with their qualified candidates represent real positive change for Yukon families.

How will the Liberals rebate the $2000 on Oct 8, 2016 at 1:41 pm

or more it will cost Yukoners on this new carbon tax. That just in Whitehorse. It will be higher in the communities except for Watson Lake. Closer to $3000 per year.

Next thing this government will do is add a sale tax on everything. on Oct 8, 2016 at 1:33 pm

Yukoners do you want a sales tax? Folks the carbon tax will drive away investment in Canada.
We will not be competitive. Tourism will take a big hit like BC did when they put the tax on fuels.
Ontario is putting on a tax of 5 cents a liter starting January 1.
Ottawa reduces our funding and has no increases for five years.
I am so sorry but this leader supported the cuts in the house.
Big question is, can we afford this type of government in the Yukon?

Up 31 Down 21

Don't forget folks this leader supported 35 cent a liter increase in fuel over on Oct 8, 2016 at 1:26 pm

the next five years. This will drive everything up in the Yukon especially food costs, travel, heating your homes. This carbon tax will break our economy and we will go down just like under the last liberal government in the Yukon.

We don't have treaties in the Yukon on Oct 8, 2016 at 9:09 am

First Nation fight against treaties because that would be against land claims.
This is the challenge for the liberal leader not understanding Yukon history - especially First Nations.
Far as the economy goes let's see the plan.
So the liberal leader will not stand up for Yukoners in Ottawa.
Ottawa can do what they want with the Yukon.
Liberals don't have an economic development plan or they would tell us.
A couple million dollars cut in taxes will help nothing for our economy.
We need a $200 million economic development venture fund.
The money is in the system already.
You just need to know how to look and where!
Leader's need visions of the future for the Yukon.
Where is it?
Why does this not return emails or phone calls?

I have to admit, that's is a strong team they've put together. That's good news for us.

ProScience Greenie on Oct 7, 2016 at 10:49 pm

They do have a pretty decent team. Not that tied in with the various old boys and girls clubs or full of odd ideology. The leader has a math degree. Math is good.

The new carbon sin tax isn't sitting well. Most want to reduce our GHG emissions but get that this tax isn't the most effective way to do that. Might be a deal breaker for some, others not so much. Would be nice to see a written in stone guarantee that it won't sting us. Throwing around terms like 'revenue neutral' doesn't cut it.

Time will tell, with the devil in the details over the next month but so far, considering a decade of an increasingly feckless Yukon Party and a lame and lost NDP, they appear to be the stronger team.

Given the Liberal Party's performance on a Federal level I have reservations about how the Liberals will perform on a Territorial level.

Why isn't anyone talking about 'grass roots' issues? Health Care? Education? Cost of food these days? Cost of renting a roof? Silver is right about one thing..no one has a monopoly on good idea's.. so ..where are they?

The Liberal party is lucky that the Pasloski government has got to go.
