Theft of trapping equipment a ‘big blow’

The theft of several “bushlife essential” items from a cabin

By Rhiannon Russell on January 29, 2015

The theft of several “bushlife essential” items from a cabin near Mendenhall took time and may have involved more than one suspect, according to Whitehorse RCMP.

Andrea Fischer returned to her family’s log cabin, base camp for their trapline, at Annie Ned Creek on Monday to find the place had been broken into.

Several items had been stolen, including a quad, a long-track Bravo, a wall tent, snowshoes and a wood stove.

She’d been out breaking trail for the upcoming Yukon Quest, so the theft likely occurred between Jan. 12 and 22, Cpl. Natasha Dunmall said this morning.

The suspects damaged the driveway gate and cabin door to gain access.

The theft is a “big blow” to Fischer, her husband and their three children, she said this morning in an email.

“Our family has been affected but we are going to keep trapping. The equipment stolen is essential to work our trapline and get our kids out on the land.

“Friends have offered us equipment to keep going, we can’t stand idle when something like this happens.”

She and her husband, Ryan Sealy, began trapping in 1993. They make their living off the trapline in the fall and winter.

“Neither of us grew up trapping, but we were both interested in the bush and a healthy lifestyle,” Sealy wrote in a post on the Fur Institute of Canada’s website.

“When we came north, we came for adventure, and the people we met here showed us how to make a living in the bush.”

Their cabin, situated about 10 kilometres before Mendenhall on the way to Haines Junction from Whitehorse, is visible from the Alaska Highway.

“It was not a smash-and-run, as large, cumbersome items were taken,” said Dunmall.

“Hopefully, a good Samaritan sees one of the items, and calls the police.”

Anyone with any knowledge about the theft can contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5551.

Yes Groucho...indeed! Don't forget those days you reflect on were also in a time when scumbags that ripped us off, we "dealt" with it..often ourselves.
Also it was a pre-Gladue (nonsense) enabling.
Depending how far back you are reflecting on, near about 1982 accused/convicted criminals were turned into victims with faaaaar more rights than most NON scumbag/thief types...yup...P.E.T's "CCoR&F.
That said, factor in 33 years of that gibberish, the unaccountable judges AND inept crown, the victim industry, and never keeping animals (species irrelevant) in CAGES where bad animals belong....and you get what we have here today.
Some scumbags you just can't reach.
....hope you get your gear back and get a dog to leave when you're not home...Trevor may have been able to help....but he was "put down".
Too damn bad we don't "put down" bipods that act as Trevor was alleged to have.
Think of all the extra room we'd have up here....heaps of we would!
Good luck and if caught..I look forward to reading of the breaches...parole violations...and the sad tale of the alleged and hopefully soon to be caught...thieving scumbag(s)!

Groucho d'North on Jan 31, 2015 at 5:45 pm

This is not the North that it once was. There used to be respect for other people's property and one's self respect as well. It used to be you could go for a weekend's sled ride and use the trappers cabins as long as you replaced what you used, cut some extra firewood and left a little something for the trust and sharing of the trapper.
Not anymore, vandals and punks destroy these cabins for the sake of destruction and their own twisted rewards.
I hope whoever performed this robbery is caught and soon and they are penalized as an example to others who disrespect the property and livelihood of families and individuals who make a living on the land and depend on the items that were taken.
Parents teach your kids values and the self respect not to be a thief.

No Thomas, the Suadi's do not have the right medicine for this or anything else. We don't want to ever go there. Our own Laws of the Yukon are much better - shame and banishment outside of our borders and don't ever come back.

Filthy thieves. The Saudi's have got the right medicine for thieves like this.

Really hope you get your stuff back...
