Summit patrols yielded no major incidents: RCMP

RCMP officers from the Yukon and British Columbia stepped up enforcement in the White Pass and Haines Pass areas over the Easter weekend.

By Whitehorse Star on April 6, 2018

RCMP officers from the Yukon and British Columbia stepped up enforcement in the White Pass and Haines Pass areas over the Easter weekend.

These areas generally see a high increase in traffic each year over the holiday, both on and off the road.

In the Haines Pass area, officers saw a significant drop in participants from previous years, largely due to the lack of snow in the area, the RCMP said Wednesday.

Officers conducted check stops and patrols all weekend, including on snowmobiles.

“Those who were out enjoying what was left of the snow were in compliance with regulations,” police said.

“No tickets were issued, and no injuries were reported.

The White Pass area saw quite a bit more traffic and activity.

Officers set up two major check stops and performed snowmobile patrols through the entire pass, and foot patrols at the Log Cabin and Summit.

Officers reported speaking to an estimated 200 people who were either passing through or enjoying activities in the area.

RCMP patrols resulted in:

• one impaired driving charge;

• one 24-hour driver’s licence suspension;

• 45 speeding charges;

• one person’s driver’s licence suspended;

• two vehicles impounded; and

• drug paraphernalia seized.

RCMP units out on the patrols included Yukon RCMP Traffic Services, Yukon RCMP Relief Unit, B.C. RCMP Traffic Services, Carcross RCMP and Haines Junction RCMP.

“Overall, there were no major incidents reported in the White Pass or Haines Pass areas,” police said.

“Most people police spoke with were enjoying the beautiful weather, having a good time, and were pleased to see extra enforcement being conducted in the area.”

Please, oh please, somebody, anyone, anyone at all, get a psychiatrist for The Outlaw on these message boards. It used to be amusing , now it’s just embarrassing and sad.

While wrapped up and promoted as public safety justification, these patrols are nothing more than a revenue opportunity by enforcing idiotic regulations such as sled registration. I can't recall any sleds stolen during any of these weekend family events, so what's all the sudden interest in who owns which sled?

Hey drum...whilst not really a snowmobile thing, know what I did the other day? Took a shovel when I strolled with my bitches, and cleaned the PC trail we walk of everyone’s dog waste.
Not just my own twos contributions, but fox turds, others pooches, some beer cans, wrappers...yes there are those who do these things.
I love the wild AND fossil fuel fun imagine eh?
So drum...ever clean up a winters dump of feces on a public trail?
I presume not. Oh yeah...I do it each spring, for fellow trail walkers that may wonder...where did it all go?
The alleged intolerant hillbilly xenophobic racist patriarchal perpetuator narcissistic geezer...made all that sh*t disappear like magic.
But hey you keep beating that drum, as is your right to freely express yourself.
And I will pull out my six guns, metaphorically speaking doing the same...just different.

Hey BnR..
“The nut tree” really?
I got the point made, even factoring your 100% factually correctly locating those passes on a map. Clap clap clap, you passed geography.
You seem to love putting folks down whom have contrary views, I know...purdy rich eh?
I do not think I do the same, however when OJW appears often the haters of cognitive use come out full force with “nut tree” judgements.
I stand by my interpretation of your moniker...Brain not Running.
Enjoy your police state, with roadside cavity searches soon to follow ...
Ya know...”for safety”
Those that seek “government security” over personal freedoms...deserve neither.
Fill your jackboots BnR, reply or not with whatever...only moderation may stop ya not me.

"The restrictive, tightly controlled jurisdiction we live in today with its never ending rules is nothing like the happy, free Yukon I remember."
Uh, Dave, both coastal passes are in British Columbia....

"We have the highest Homicide rates nearly anywhere...." Nearly anywhere.
Nearly. Anywhere.
Well, everyones got an opinion, I guess that's yours.....
Man, the nut tree got shaken pretty hard for this article....

The local plods must be on some sort of ‘numbers-based bonus’, where their remuneration is index-linked, to the number of law-abiding citizens ( or, God forbid ), people out on snowmobiles enjoying the Easter sunshine, are pulled over for having fun and for doing something useful with their lives instead of becoming another Starbucks-resident RCMP officer with their Grade 10 education.

Eliminates the occasional riders on Apr 10, 2018 at 3:11 pm

I go snow machining once a year for fun, and am not going to get a license plate and insurance for that. No more trips to the summit for me on easter weekend with friends. I guess it's going to be just for the hard core regular riders and people with a lot of money to throw around.

@ Josey Wales & My Opinion - Hear, hear! As someone born and raised here since the 60's it saddens me as to what's happening in this territory, this used to be a place where people lived who didn't want to have big brother looking over their shoulder every minute of every day. We loved it because it was free and you could live your life without having to have a permit, ticket, rules, or licence for everything you did. You could drive down the road without finding a cop stopped on the side of the road asking everyone their business like they did over the long weekend, seriously when did I suddenly enter a twilight zone where the RCMP stop everyone and ask where they are going? I thought that's what the communists used to have to live under. The restrictive, tightly controlled jurisdiction we live in today with its never ending rules is nothing like the happy, free Yukon I remember.

RCMP should get on their sleds and atvs and maybe park near the odd trailhead around town to see how many people are ignoring the rules.

Hey my opinion, good valid points.
Kinda parallels hunting season with the seasonal shakedown of firearms enthusiasts and others caught in the dragnet.
Funny that...the stuff they see as they come and go from their fortress in town here appears to be of very little interest to M?
In fairness I eat some of their time with my visits there, asking precisely why that is.
As recently as a few weeks back I was classically dismissed yet again, by some politician dressed as a member...and?
Despite me knowing full well there are stellar members desiring to do a good job. The evidence in our community, suggests to me political motivation to enable the bigotry of lower expectations, and feed off the low hanging fruit.
So here ya go M a public proclamation from you know who, I am not interested in writing useless letters to useless politicians.
I am seriously not interested in speaking with politicians in cop uniforms.
I am seriously disappointed with our level of compost in our town being Whitehorse, apparently you enforce our laws but certainly seem Uber selective on with whom and which ones.
Between field trips as this now annual one, the apparent willful ignorance of the BOLE crews and the wee up and comers to follow here in town, your cohorts in our kangaroo courts, and now your employers write laws...WTF?
In short, I am done with my visits to your fortress.

To the good members over the years, thanks for your patience in trying to satiate my desire to reduce the compost and change up your diet of said low fruit.

The folks going to the summits in the future, you should rebrand it as culture camp or a seventh century sycophants retreat.
Then you will get nothing but peace and quiet, maybe government funding for the charade, armed state actors keeping others away from you so you can exercise your culture or self proclaimed religion.

Might I add, very hard to do what we believe is a important, difficult and thankless job...without the support and faith of the people y’all claim to serve and protect.

Wonder how many of the dead folks piling up in town choked to death on snowmobile fumes? (In no way directed at a recent deceased citizen)
I stand by every crazy post, every civic feedback sent to our nobles, and every thing CCTV captured during my fortress pissing matches over the years.
The hell with snowmobiles, our community requires you to toss your BOLE orders and remember that you are L.E.O. not politicians, social workers or Justine’s pit bulls.

Keep the windows up ...glasses on ...and that blue wall up and strong. We can always buy new stuff, fix our property, bury our citizens, fund toothless internal “investigations”, bling your employers out with the best paramilitary gear on the market.
Glad your team was able to leave this sh*thole for a fieldtrip, free pour pariah season is here and on your doorstep.
No carbon footprint to have, as boots work...and yes they are made for walking.
Check first with Justine and CYFN to see if you are able though.
as would suggest is S.O.P.

Who has to clear up the crap and garbage left behind by the pristine lovers who just love to go into the wilderness. (the group on the snowmobiles at the summit on the Easter weekend) No responsibility by the "Love the Wild group".

My Opinion on Apr 6, 2018 at 6:09 pm

That's Nice. So the Snowmobilers were doing nothing wrong. The tickets that were issued were to the general public that were caught up in the increased attention to the area.
I take great exception to this kind of attention personally, and am tired of being labelled as a snowmobiler as though there is some kind of connotation of wrong doing or intent to do wrong.

Where was this kind of attention to the Buckwheat the week before or Mount Sima on any weekend.

The first year that the RCMP decided that they had to start doing patrols to keep people safe supposedly, at the Haines Summit it was them that had to be extricated from a large Crevasse at Huge expense to the Tax Payer. It was a Cop on the payroll that fell in when he was going in an area he had no business going. Also an area that no experienced snowmobilers go.

Stop wasting our tax dollars doing this and start doing your job. We have the highest Homicide rates nearly anywhere and apparently no manpower to investigate the files let alone protect us from future occurrences. When your house gets broken into or your light bar disappears from your truck, you are given a file number so you can start an insurance claim. Sorry no manpower to help you out.

But go out in the Bush for the weekend and they are standing around out in the bush flagging you down. I for one am sick and tired of being the LOW HANGING FRUIT!!!!

45 speeding tickets with about 200 people? If you say 2 people per vehicle (reasonable assumption, no?) then that's nearly a 50% infraction rate.
This would indicate that the speed limits are too low as statistically 85% of people will drive at a safe speed.

Are the limits being kept artificially low for revenue generation?

This unwarranted police action amounts to public harassment by the police.
