BRAINSTORMING UNDERWAY – The public engagement phase for the Robert Service Way area plan, which began July 28, will continue until Sept. 10. The former South Access Road was first built in 1942, and widened and realigned in 1997. Inset Kinden Kosick.

Sign sparks wonderment about arterial road area

There are no immediate changes proposed for the land off Robert Service Way, city officials say.

There are no immediate changes proposed for the land off Robert Service Way, city officials say.

The city has posted a sign highlighting possibilities for the area.

Since then, numerous calls have been coming into the city from concerned residents, along with social media posts about it.

The sign, city planner Kindon Kosick explained, was put there in an effort to get people talking about the area and its future.

“It’s got the conversation going,” Kosick said.

It also resulted in some misunderstanding that the city wasn’t expecting, he added.

Numerous calls have come in from residents concerned about the possibility of what might be going in there.

It’s part of the effort to get public input on the Robert Service Way area plan being worked on right now.

The plan looks at the area stretching from Ear and Hobo Lakes to the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport and from the Alaska Highway down to the Yukon River just before the downtown area.

The public engagement phase for the plan began July 28 and will continue until Sept. 10.

The signs were placed along Robert Service Way to get people thinking and talking about the area.

As well, pop-up booths have been set up at the Fireweed Community Market in Shipyards Park to draw direct input from residents.

Emails are being welcomed, and a long- and short-form survey are each available through the city’s website.

As Kosick explained, the two different surveys were developed so that those who have more time and might have a greater interest in the area can take the time (estimated at about 20 minutes) to answer more detailed questions.

Meanwhile, those who might not have as much time but are interested can do the shorter survey. With the survey available until Sept. 10, officials have not looked at results.

Based on all the input received, Kosick said, “there’s lots of interest in the area.”

Through the variety of input collected, the city has heard a range of comments from support for the dirt bike area - currently leased to the Yukon Cross Country Motorcycle Association.

The 6.9-hectare site has been used by off-road vehicle riders since the 1970s, with the land leased to a variety of user groups over the years.

They’ve also heard support for other recreational uses in the area. The city and its contractor on the study, Jane of All Trades, continue to work on the initiative.

It’s expected there will be a couple of more pop-up events before public input on the project concludes.

“We’re sort of starting to trend that way,” Kosick said of the pop-up booths the city sets up in places where residents already are.

He said it’s a good way to reach people who might not otherwise turn out for a public meeting focused on a specific matter – or may not even know about a particular issue or study underway yet.

Following the public input portion of the study, a draft plan will be written and available for another session of public comment before council votes on whether to adopt it.

“The city is hoping to have the final report completed for council adoption in October,” it’s noted on the city’s website.

The final report will be used to inform the next review of the Official Community Plan that’s expected to begin late this year or early next year.

Sounds like something a guy with a man bun from Toronto would come up with.

Hey folks...remember the ol days when we could (gasp) merely use the area formerly called our wee town? Now it seems we need a hall pass from some special interest association to traverse? Chronic "land use" planning s••t creating serious polarizing of our citizens, yet...it seems the "plan" is written in pencil if you are a crony?
Decades worth of micro management from the ever so important administrators of this "town"...
Decades worth land use pandering and special interest sodomy via the collective purse a.k.a. Wealth redistribution...
...and now they pound a sign in an area where folks dare enjoy their fossil fuel units, about farming?
Clearly a brash boast of the disdain the nobles and the administration have with ol town folk. We are ripe with progressive delusional cucks whom sure seem hell bent on ramming waaaaaay too much of their progressive nonsense under the guise of civic planning down our gullets.
I myself could pound a sign outside of the hall, that most definitely would get a conversation going.
You wish to have conversations with your peasants do ya ma lords?
Funny that, I get the exact opposite understanding based on your civic track record. Nary a s**t is given what we say, your outcomes are long predetermined. But hey, good acting ma lords.
There are many in this civic bloat that should also give serious thought to their future use, is it sustainable this civic arrogance and polarizing of our people?
seriously folks, how long will we tolerate the epic, epic chronic stupidity outta OUR hall?
Work on your fiscal accountability by law, defund your special interest fetish. Stop polarizing everything and everyone here, we are still a wilderness city...despite your best efforts.
Folks as long as we are governed ever so arrogantly civic wise at least, as long as we are force fed crap from progressive idiots...there are many infecting our "striving for excellence" team...
I will most certainly have a few things to say, one must not like what I say...matters not.
A conversation you say ma lords?
Suuuuure ya do, cuz your actions illustrates a diametric tone deaf civic nobility arrogance.

The area has been used the way it is presently because it is at the end of an airstrip...kinda loud and a bit dicey for residential use. Why do folks always refer to a need for social housing?...there's no where for anybody to build due to nimbyism in this fine town, is this the only place the City will look at for development. GAS-grow a set....

The area near ball diamonds is good for ball and trail bikes but it has potential for many other uses.

Prime area close to town. With noise dampening materials due to proximity to airport it could be used for social housing. This housing has to go somewhere and both ball diamonds and dirt bike area could be moved.

Hope the city steps back and makes the best decision and does not react to unreasonable elite entitled views.

Leave that land alone, current use is fine.

For Forty years that has been used for motorized use. In the 70's it was Oval Ice Racing, both studded motorcycles and snowmobiles, in the 80's and 90's it was a paved Go Cart Track and Mud Bogs down at the back of the property, since the Millennium it has been the current Mud Bog Group and the Moto Cross Group that presently use the area.

I have bought and paid for a country res. property so that I can have a garden. The people of Whitehorse should not have to subsidize me to play in the garden. It seems now that the modern day Hippie (Reborn) wants to live in a Tiny house claiming a smaller footprint while sponging off of someone else by living in their backyard and using their facilities. Oh this New Age Thinking. Now I suppose they think that since they live on a postage stamp that I (the tax payer) should supply them with a gardening spot.

Well think again!!!!
