The Committee on Abuse in Residential Schools Society (CAIRS) was broken into last weekend, and more than $2,000 in goods were stolen.

A 19-inch Acer laptop, three or four Woods bed rolls, cheques and a drum were stolen from the downtown centre early last Sunday morning.

A surveillance camera across Fourth Avenue observed some activity at 2:35 a.m., Joanne Henry, the society’s executive director, told the Star this morning.

She said the suspect or suspects accessed the building through a bathroom window.

They hopped the fence in the backyard and ran up a toboggan to reach it, Henry said.

The unknown person left behind a package of bacon with blood on it, she said.

Whitehorse RCMP are investigating.

Henry said she suspects the culprit is someone who’s “familiar with the organization.”

To climb up the toboggan and get through the window, he or she must also be small, she said.

Henry said she’s saddened by the recent break-ins around Whitehorse, particularly at non-profit organizations, such as the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter and the Whitehorse Fish Ladder.

“We have nothing,” she said. “It’s not like we’re rich and we have a bunch of stuff.

“It’s the stuff that we use for our clients that’s being taken ... You don’t come away from this feeling very good.”

Henry is particularly upset about the stolen drum. It was hers, made by someone very close to her, she said.

“The value is unlimited,” she said. “It was part of my healing. Very, very sentimental.

“I’m really hoping it will turn up. I don’t think it will, but I’m hopeful.”

Henry asks that anyone with any information about the incident call CAIRS at 667-2247.

Police, who were unavailable for comment today on the break-in, can be contacted at 667-5555.

Even if they were caught..what's going to happen to the little crooks? Nothing. Eventually they are going to break into someones business or home who doesn't have a grip on reality and will pay dearly. Maybe they think everyone is sane and nothing is ever going to happen to them.

Lots of renegades in the Yukon. They better be careful.

The thefts these days are just getting pathetic. Nowhere is safe. I hope that these people are caught and publically shamed, as we all know that no justice will be served to them.
