Jeanie Dendys of the Yukon Liberal Party was confirmed as the MLA-designated for Mountainview after a recount of votes on Friday.

Dendys won with 439 of the ballots cast.

She beat out Premier Darrell Pasloski of the Yukon Party, who took 399 votes, and the NDP’s Shaunagh Stikeman, who drew 432 votes.

One ballot changed from the first count on election night (Nov. 7). A vote that was originally declared for Stikeman was rejected by Yukon Supreme Court Justice Leigh Gower.

A recount is required if a riding is won by 10 votes or fewer.

Gower began recounting the Mountainview votes at the courthouse at about 10 a.m. Friday.

The recount, which was not open to the public, wrapped up at about 2:30 p.m., said Dave Wilkie, the Yukon’s assistant chief electoral officer.

In the event of a tie, he said, there is a “drawing of lots,” meaning, essentially, that the winner is picked from a hat.

In 1996, there was a drawing of lots in Vuntut Gwitchin, when the NDP’s Robert Bruce and the Yukon Party’s Esau Shafer tied with 68 votes each. The Liberals’ Shirlee Frost earned 27 votes that year.

After a recount of ballots and a draw, Bruce was declared the MLA, and went on to become Speaker.

The new Liberal government, led by premier-designate Sandy Silver, will be sworn in Dec. 3 in the foyer of the Yukon Government Main Administration Building.

All Yukoners are welcome to the ceremony, which will begin at 2 p.m.

The Yukon Party will be sworn in at the legislature at noon Nov. 29, and the two NDP MLAs will be sworn in Friday.
