The body of a 72-year-old man from B.C.’s Lower Mainland was discovered floating in Lake Laberge near the campground Thursday evening.

The man had been paddling alone when his kayak overturned, resulting in a likely drowning death, RCMP said today.

No foul play is suspected

People fishing in the area just north of Whitehorse discovered the body Thursday and contacted police, who retrieved it shortly afterward.

The man was wearing a life jacket when the incident occurred, RCMP noted.

It is not yet known when the man died.

Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.

The case has been turned over to the Yukon Coroner’s Service.

“Police wish to remind everyone that when travelling the Yukon wilderness and waterways, one should be properly outfitted with supplies and self-rescue equipment,” said Whitehorse RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland.

Self-rescue equipment includes personal flotation devices, he told the Star this morning. It can also include inflatable paddle sleeves.

“If you do roll over, they help to assist you pull you and your kayak back up,” Hoogland said.

“Additionally, one should also explore the back country within their experience and abilities.”

Police are not revealing the man’s identity, as next-of-kin are still being notified.
