About 3,000 Whitehorse residents’ mornings were disrupted by a brief power outage.

Today’s widespread outage began at 9:55 a.m.

It affected people in the Marwell industrial area, Porter Creek, Crestview, Range Road and parts of Hillcrest and downtown.

Stephanie Cunha, a spokesperson for ATCO Electric, confirmed that electricity was restored to all customers by just after 11 a.m.

The outage also affected most communities north of Whitehorse, except Keno City, said Janet Patterson, Yukon Energy’s communications manager.

Patterson estimated the number of Yukon Energy customers in the affected communities to be at least 2,000.

The two companies were working together to determine a cause for the outage.

Yukon Energy suspects a tree fell on one of the company’s power lines.

Patterson noted that the cause can’t be confirmed until an aerial patrol is conducted later in the week.

“Winds are too high to safely do the patrol today,” Patterson said in a statement.

Considering that Keno City did lose power (albeit for only 5 minutes), how much do they really know about what happens?

They suspect a tree fell over a power line. They aren't sure. Sounds like a cover up for that damn squirrel.

@Yukon56

At least this one is a legitimate reason--we can't get rid of wind (although we'd have less of it if they quit cutting down trees to create unnecessary subdivisions).

I still don't believe that THAT many animals were nuked this summer...coincidentally it's always around peak usage times...
