RIDINGS TARGETED – Shown Saturday, left to right, are potential Yukon Liberal Party candidates John Streicker and Tamara Goeppell, party leader Sandy Silver, who represents Klondike in the legislature, and potential candidates Ramesh Ferris and Rod Taylor.

Potential candidates reveal riding ambitions

The Yukon Liberals rallied about 70 party supporters at its annual general meeting over the weekend.

The Yukon Liberals rallied about 70 party supporters at its annual general meeting over the weekend.

And potential candidates for the next territorial election announced where they will be seeking nominations.

“Ultimately, it came down to altruistic decisions,” party leader Sandy Silver said Saturday.

“You want to go where you can do the best (job), but you also want to go with where you identify your heart.”

This was the case for MLA-hopeful Tamara Goeppel, who announced she will be seeking the Liberals’ nomination for the riding of Whitehorse Centre.

“I’ve basically been born and raised in that riding,” Goeppel said of her decision, noting that she also chose to raise her sons in the area.

“To be parachuted into a riding where I wouldn’t know the names of the streets ... I felt that wouldn’t be authentic.”

Encompassing all of the downtown, from the Marwell industrial district to the roundabout on Robert Service Way, the Whitehorse Centre riding is currently held by Liz Hanson, the Yukon NDP leader.

“I’ve always been known to look for a challenge,” Goeppel said when asked about possibly running against Hanson.

Former city councillor John Streicker will seek a nomination for the riding of Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes.

If successful in his quest for candidacy, Streicker may encounter a sense of déjà-vu running against NDP incumbent Kevin Barr.

Just four years ago, Streicker was pitted against Barr in the 2011 federal election, won by the Conservatives’ Ryan Leef.

This time running under a different political banner, Streicker commented that he would have his work cut out for him.

“(Barr) is the incumbent now. That’s a distinct advantage always,” Streicker said.

“I will work hard and do the best I can.”

On a similar note, potential Liberal candidate Rod Taylor also made mention of a difficult journey ahead.

Taylor announced at the meeting that he will seek the nomination for Porter Creek Centre.

Having lived in the hamlet of Ibex Valley for a while, Taylor said his decision to try to run in Porter Creek came after his 12-year-old daughter requested that their family move “out of the woods.”

Taylor said that his family will soon be relocating to Porter Creek, where he has many old friends, including some political figures.

If there was a riding to be affiliated with, he said, Porter Creek Centre would be the one.

“It’s going to be difficult,” he said of his potential upcoming campaign.

“It’s a riding that’s been held by the Yukon Party for a long time.”

Porter Creek Centre has been represented by Yukon Party MLAs since 2002. Current MLA David Laxton is a friend of Taylor’s, he added.

“Anybody that thinks that any of this is a cakewalk doesn’t get it,” Taylor said.

“(But) it is what it is... I’m pretty darn excited to get at it.”

The most recent potential candidate to come out of the woodwork is Ramesh Ferris.

At a press conference last Thursday, Ferris announced his intent to run with the Liberals and seek the nomination for the riding of Whitehorse West – another riding grasped by the Yukon Party since 2002.

Incumbent Elaine Taylor has won her seat in three elections, and is now deputy premier.

Ferris himself was also a Yukon Party member until recently.

He said Saturday that reflection during the holidays and conversations with constituents of Whitehorse West led to his decision to leave the Yukon Party and join the Liberals.

“After reflecting, I believe that the Liberal Party truly is more in line with my values and the direction of where Yukoners want to head,” Ferris explained.

If there’s one thing that Silver is attempting to put across to Yukoners, it’s the effect and power that positive politics can have.

“Larry (Bagnell) showed us that locally, and Justin Trudeau showed us that on a national basis,” Silver said.

This month, Silver will take off on a community tour that will take him from Old Crow to Watson Lake.

The annual general meeting is akin to a wrap-up of the year.

Silver, however, wanted to put across that there are several issues he would like to take from policy to platform – most notably, education, energy and a mental health strategy for the territory.

Silver said there are several other potential candidates chomping at the bit to announce their intent to run, but would not say when to expect any further announcements.

The Liberal leader has previously said the party would hold an open nomination, and formal candidates would be decided upon then.

“Stay tuned,” he advised Saturday.

Ferris is a great advocate for polio awareness, but does not have the aptitude for much else. What a joke.

There is more to it than qualifications salar. Surely you've been around enough to know the good, the bad and the ugly of YTG hiring.

@prosciencegr......says 'we can't all have a sweet government job.....' Sounds like somebody didn't put effort into arming himself with qualifications to further their employment options.
Thanks for all the informed commenting.

North of 60, I agree with you completely. Ego is getting in the way of protecting the environment and producing electoral reform. I actually almost expected better.

Ah yes, another election year in the Yukon. Once again the blue-collar unionized lefties and the white-collar elitist lefties can't cooperate to unite the opposition and turf-out the dictatorial right wing 'growth-at-any-cost' government that rules the Yukon. The opposition parties can't put aside their fragile egos and petty disagreements long enough to see that bigger issues like electoral reform and protecting the environment are far more important than their presumed differences. As long as the left continues to act like pigs-on-ice they won't demonstrate to the voting public that either are fit to govern, and the YP dynasty of incompetent tax-dollar bagmen will continue. Some things never change.

Ramesh running as a Liberal is a gift to the Yukon Party and the Conservatives. Vet your candidates and make it a real race. No party needs candidates that are jumpers or not thoroughly vetted. I did not and will not vote for a jumper or a person whom I cannot trust. Party notwithstanding.

and don't how to lead. Why does anyone think people would leave. I am glad that the liberals are want-a-be's.

To early to tell if the federal Liberals 'sunny ways' positive politics will mean good governance or not. Time will tell.

What is important is that all the political parties in the Yukon understand that their primary goal is to represent the people of the Yukon and not their respective federal parties. There must be a firewall in place so that we are governed by Yukoner's wishes not Ottawa's.

As far as the Liberals here go, just like the NDP and YP, they will scrape together a few good candidates and the rest will be unqualified, self-serving duds or ideologically driven wingnuts.

Goeppel seems OK and I hope she gives the leader of the NDP the boot. The last thing the Yukon needs is to have the former head of the incompetent INAC at the helm. Devolution was about getting rid of that department not putting it's boss back in charge of our Yukon.

As far as a party leader pointing out that government and government workers can be incompetent goes, we need more of that not less because incompetence is rampant in YTG and it needs to be dealt with.

Meanwhile, Minto mine is announcing possible layoffs and that is not good news. The economy better be at or near the top of the priority list this election with realistic solutions offered for once. We can't all have a sweet government job but there should be other options out there to provide full time work with similar wages and benefits. Otherwise we will sink further into a have and have-not situation. Real jobs, not low-wage seasonal jobs putting on fake smiles for tourists.

No to Rod Taylor for Porter Creek (another Liberal PLEASE!!) on Jan 18, 2016 at 8:56 pm

Please don't let Rod Taylor run for Porter Creek. I will vote Liberal, and I will vote for Tamara, John and Ramish...I just won't vote for him. He's Yukon Party through and through. He doesn't live in PC and I guess if he's the only Liberal choice for PC then I'll have to vote NDP. Yukon Party power seekers are not getting my vote.

So much for any hope that the Liberals will work with the NDP in order to get rid of the Yukon Party, and provide us with the best MLA's possible.

Tamara taking aim at Liz Hanson? Well. Good luck. Most of us recall Liz's steadfast support for protection of the Peel, while who knows where the Liberals are coming from. And the Liberals can start running around the territory suddenly caring about what people think but it's ringing a bit hollow after 3 years of crickets. Okay, it's only Sandy as paid captain at the helm, but I truly do not recall any community meeting invitations coming from the Liberal party while the NDP has been out there engaging communities, whether people voted for them or not.

I am disappointed that the Liberals are going for 100% power instead of working with the NDP but I'm not surprised. So be it. Going for the brass ring, 'up for a challenge', savouring the battle at hand. Whatever turns your crank.

I'll listen, but I really like Kevin, Liz, Jan, Lois, Kate and Jim. No doubt Tamara, Rod, John and Ramesh think they are better than the NDP candidates, but they've got an uphill battle, especially in the authenticity department.

Lost in the Yukon on Jan 18, 2016 at 5:50 pm

The bloom will be of the Federal Liberal Party by the time a Territorial Election is called (you can be that the Pharmacist will not pull the trigger until it is). This will leave this group then having to run on their merits and in fact Trudeau could become a detriment.

As other have pointed out three of these candidates don't have a lot of credibility ... from being opportunistic party jumpers, to being self-promoters, to never having held a job longer than six months.

The only one that is truly passionate and credible is running in the wrong riding and unfortunately will lose and that would be a shame as her voice would have been welcomed in the House.

Don't know who is advising the Liberal Party leader but garnering press time now is a waste of time and effort ... it will quickly become old news.

Two things will now happen. The longer they are out there as unofficial candidates the longer the other two parties have to pick them apart; and when the NDP and YP announce (which will be close to the election call) they will become the new shiny object that attracts the publicity and attention and carry more momentum into a campaign.

Lots of great comments about party loyalties. These "Lieberals" should vet their candidates as carefully as the YuCon Party. Sandy and co. should emulate such YuCon party lifers as Darius Elias, Scott Kent, Doug Graham etc. LOL!!! Sheesh, such short memories.

Three of the candidates have flip flopped between political parties over the past years. Some of them have been unsuccessful past candidates. One must take a deep look at these candidates' characters and values that are so easily changeable. It is blatantly apparent that public service and good government are not motivating factors for these wanna-be candidates. It is the power, the prestige, and the pay cheque that really lies at the heart of their political ambitions.

I don't have much use for party jumpers...and of course Streiker ticked me right off over his stand on Mt. SIMA.. (give them all the taxpayer dollars they want kind of attitude.) Ferris is a party jumper.. Rod Taylor is moving just to get into power? wow. Well.. maybe he really does do what his 12 year old tells him to. I really want to vote Liberal, but outside of Tamara, I don't see much here that inspires any confidence. In the sitting Yukon Conservative Party, I not only see nothing to inspire any confidence, but they have done harm and mismanaged public funds, and also, just ticked me right off. It's going to be a hard election if candidates don't run that inspire some confidence in having a better government. Just my opinion, i never speak for anyone but myself.

People are disappointed in John going to the liberals.
You have Rod wanting the leadership and has no bones about it.
Rod likes to sell things that's it.
Rod stated he would run for YP, so how can you trust that.
Sandy makes negative statements about projects that are not true pointing out Government workers are incompetent.
Mr. Ferris has just disappointed people in Whitehorse by his actions.
Tarama is the real person in the group and should be leader because she is believable.
Others have shown they can't be believed.

I heard Ramesh was a Yukon party member a few months ago. Sounds like the Samson syndrome. Fake, fake, and just in it for himself. No thanks buddy.
