Liberal Leader Sandy Silver has a date with at least two other names on the pending election ballots in his Klondike riding.

Jay Farr, a City of Dawson council member and former Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation’s deputy chief, was acclaimed last Thursday evening as the Yukon NDP’s candidate for the riding.

Meanwhile, Brad Whitelaw has been acclaimed as the Yukon Party candidate.

Farr’s political experience and deep roots in the community will make Klondike one of the most watched races in this fall’s election, the party said in a statement.

Farr said he feels ready to become an MLA under a government headed by Liz Hanson.

“I have been impressed and encouraged by the Yukon NDP’s strong and measured approach to the issues: the environment, government to government relations, and most recently, the mining debacle at C4,” said Farr.

“As a Yukon NDP MLA, I want to be a part of positive new government that will work with partners like municipalities and First Nation governments to put forward solutions to these problems.”

The NDP, he said, is “the only party that has unequivocally supported the Final Recommended Peel Watershed Land Use Plan from day one and has taken a principled position against the use of hydraulic fracturing in the territory.”

Hanson said she was pleased to add another candidate to the party’s roster.

“Jay brings a depth of  experience as an elected official, and with such deep roots in the community, he’ll make an excellent representative for all residents of the Klondike.”

Whitelaw said he is “honoured and excited to have the chance to be able to represent the residents of Klondike.

“I look forward to hearing everyone’s priorities for the future. I feel that my many years spent in business in our community have given me a solid understanding of Dawson’s economy and challenges.”

Whitelaw owns the Triple J Hotel and owns and operates the Klondike Spirit.

He is a member of the Canadian Rangers and has volunteered in many different capacities over the years.

It's starting to look like i don't have anyone to vote for. I like all the individuals running for NDP.. but I don't like NDP policies. The Liberals have 1 strong player.. the rest pretty weak.. YP? Not even if hell froze over and they sent me ice skates would i ever again vote Yukon Party.

He is the weakest of all the candidates. Who is next in line to head up the bad news bear team.

Best of luck to the NDP in the Klondike! Would be really refreshing to see Jay win.
