A man was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital with life-threatening injuries following a shooting in Porter Creek on Wednesday evening.

Whitehorse RCMP responded to the shooting on the Alaska Highway by the Wann Road intersection at around 6:40 p.m.

The name of the man injured in the shooting has not been released.

According to police, a red pickup truck was seen leaving the scene of the shooting.

RCMP set up checkpoints last night.

Officers asked motorists entering and leaving the area if they had seen a vehicle fitting that description.

The Yukon RCMP Major Crime Unit is continuing to investigate the incident, and say the investigation is only in its early stages.

A section of the Alaska Highway was still closed this morning between the Wann Road and Birch Street intersections.

The detour, involving MacDonald Road and Centennial Street, has caused a slight delay in traffic in the area.

The RCMP were scheduled to update the media on the criminal investigation at 2 p.m. today.

People are sad that someone made a poor choice in life and chose to be a drug dealer? I am confused! I am not attempting to be heartless and I do feel bad for the families who are thrust into this, but this shooting was not random. This shooting was targeted. The problem with this small town is there are more people, therefore there are more addictions. Instead of providing counselling and facilities for people to right their mental state, society wonders what is happening to their little town! Pull your head out of the sand and take a look at our town.

For the record OF COURSE I'm saddened and concerned that a young person was killed, and likely killed by another young person. It is horrible. Such a tragic event that will impact so many people. Please don't presume that because I commented on one issue I don't care about the bigger issue. Boy people here sure can be nasty.

In my opinion our only thought should be for the person killed, the reason for this, the impact on our innocent citizens going about their business, and what is happening to our once decent community that we live in. And, what is happening for the future, Is this gang, drug related, is the south invading our wonderful Territory, is it going to be destroyed just like downtown Vancouver.

Its harsh but true that none of the recent deaths are a huge surprise to anyone. If that's the lifestyle you choose then you reap what you sow.

Is this really about the detour or about the fact that another kid was murdered in our once quiet town? Get over the detour and let the RCMP do their investigation. Holy crap another murder and all you are worried about is the detour not to your liking. Why don't you concentrate on the murders and wrong doings going on in our community rather than if a YG employee is getting paid for being away from his or her family for the night.
I drive a lot in this town and if you don't waive your hands frantically when you are directing traffic people don't see you. Half the time people don't use their signals anyways and they drive way to fast when passing emergency workers and flag people.
I hope the Investigation goes well and those involved are put away. RIP all who have been murdered this year. Let's hope for a better year next year. Oh and god forbid if we get anymore detours. Don't want to upset those that are going home at 1 am.

Anie--someone was murdered and your concerned about the traffic control? Sorry for the inconvenience to you.
And we wonder why there is so much entitlement in this town.

Whitehorse desperately needs PRO-ACTIVE policing.

Why can't local politicians realize this ?

Well another homicide in our wee town, lovely.
How could this happen we now have rainbow crosswalks and yet still rage? Wonder if it is regular murder or extra special with a identifiable member of a myriad of special folks?
Yes of course I am being a smart ass...as violence is violence and dead is dead matters not whom. Our hilarious laws cover everyone, and always have. My sarcasm is revealing the stupidity of classification of the violence.
Pretty sure those bullets hurt just like it would for anyone, your family will miss you just as much as anyone's would....rainbows do nothing for community rot....clearly!
For such a wee place, we are the most unhealthy violent community rife with unaccountability on so so many levels that I have ever resided in.
Really quite shameful this complacent attitude we have been conditioned to "tolerate" as it relates to nefarious activities in this compost.

A young person is dead - how sad is that no matter what the circumstances are. They have a family that will be devastated by their loss.
My concern is what is happening in this town. We have had 7 homicides this year.
It is just getting like the south - we used to be so different and special - things are so changing.
I am sorry for the loss of life on our streets in the early evening (daylight) in a suburb of Whitehorse - people going home from work and shopping - minding their own business. Innocent people could have been dragged into whatever was happening!!!

Anie. YTG hasn't existed for more than a decade, It's YG. Also, if there were people sleeping in those trucks, write down the unit number and report them.

instead of putting up detour signs along the entire route, YTG has posted a person at each intersection who stands there frantically waving their arms at drivers who already have their turn signals going. People who live here know how to get back onto the highway. Pity the poor out of towner who gets no direction beyond the foolish hand waving. And when I came through around 1 am Thursday there were YTG pickups but no sign of a person at any crossing. I can only guess they were asleep in those trucks. At double time no doubt.
