The RCMP Major Crime Unit is investigating a homicide in Whitehorse.

Police officers responded to a report of a body shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, they said early this afternoon.

The discovery was quickly determined to be a homicide.

A 25-year old man from Whitehorse has been identified as the victim.

RCMP have not released the man’s name, as they are contacting family members.

They have also not released details on the location where his body was found out of a concern that it could negatively impact the investigation.

Major Crime Unit investigators are working closely with the Yukon Coroner’s Service on the investigation.

A forensic autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow at Vancouver General Hospital.

Multiple RCMP Units are also assisting. They include the Forensic Identification Section, Police Dog Service, General Investigation Section and the Whitehorse detachment.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call 667-5555.

People can also provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.crimestoppersyukon.ca.

Further details on the case were expected to be released later this afternoon.

@woodcutter is correct. Unless one is socially active in a very specific socioeconomic group then these homicides don't impact their life in any way. Most homicides involve people engaged in criminal activity killing each other.

I don't play in that lifestyle, so I haven't noticed a dramatic change in the last 5 years. However if I needed to hide something, there is so many better spots.

@ Thank you RCMP
I'm not prepared to discuss the reasons for my comment with somebody who is hiding behind a nym. By the way everybody is entitled to their opinion whether you like it or not.

You'll notice that homicide is up in the Yukon. So what's changed?

Look at all the new people in the Yukon, notice anything different? I sure do.

People talk as if the cops are at fault here.
It is far more likely that everyone who has lost their live's in the last few years led a very risky lifestyle (still no less tragic).
Perhaps we can start blaming the cause of the issue. Drugs, gangs, and societal inequality issues.
Solving a homicide is not a forgone conclusion as many here seem to believe with their CBS and YouTube law degree. They may be shocked to hear many things which TV portrays is not real. Shocking...I know. Also not everyone is cooperative with investigators.... even more shocking, I know.

GAAAAAA - another one ???!!!

How soon will I have to hide in my house when the sun goes down ?
Time for a City police force?
The building full of Mounties that you never see doesn't seem to be getting the job done.

This is awful. Can we please solve the other murder mysteries before having any more?

.... and for the RCMP to solve for a change one of the murders. You can read always they investigate, special task force and bla bla. Nothing happens and I'm not talking about 2017 - we had a 2016 as well.

It is a tragedy that so much is happening in Whitehorse that even 5 years ago I would have associated with a metropolis. Drugs, murder, gangs, more petty crime than is recorded because people have just stopped reporting it. They know even if the RCMP get the criminal, the courts will do the slap on the wrist...maybe just a touch..as slaps are considered torture these days.

I know what's changed in 5 years.. does anyone else?

Another...nothing I can say not said before.
For our wee town yet another.

We need to ban scumbags...from our community.
