The young man who jumped into the Pelly River in July, triggering a community-wide search, died of drowning and hypothermia.

The Yukon Coroners Service has released a report on the death of Richard Hager, a 21-year-old Pelly Crossing resident.

It states that he was intoxicated when he jumped from the bridge over the Pelly River on July 19. His remains were found nine days later in a back eddy about one kilometre downstream from the bridge.

Hager and a friend were crossing the bridge on foot at about 10 p.m. when Hager took off his shoes and hat and did a back flip off the bridge.

Pelly Crossing RCMP Cpl. Josh Wiese said witnesses heard him shouting for help and saw him struggling in the water. They notified police, who launched a boat.

Over the next several days, the community rallied to look for Hager.

Wiese said at the time about 100 local residents became involved, searching the river by boat, walking along the riverbanks, donating food and coffee, and cooking breakfast at the mission’s home base, the Link Building.

The coroner’s report notes that jumping from the Pelly River bridge is dangerous due to the cold temperature of the water, currents and undertow and the potential hidden dangers of the river and shoreline.
