A young man who got lost Sunday on Golden Horn Mountain was found safe by police and treated for exposure and dehydration.

The 22-year-old called police for help at 6 p.m. He’d set out that morning for a hike on his own.

Conditions were foggy and damp, Whitehorse RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland said this morning.

Whitehorse Search and Rescue and police began patrolling the area using ATVs.

They were in the process of pinging the man’s phone for a location when they found him, about two hours after the call came in.

“He had warm hiking gear with him, but no means to make a fire,” Hoogland said.

He also had no water or food.

The man was about 150 metres from the trailhead near Coal Lake Road. Crews treated him on scene and released him.

Police are reminding those who use the hiking trails to dress appropriately for the weather and take extra water and food to keep hydrated and maintain energy.

Make a plan and stick to your plan. Tell someone where you are going and your expected return time.

It's nice he was found and everything was ok. No doubt he and anyone he talks to will be more prepared in the future. These things happen to nice people, no need to be harsh about it Guncache.

This sounds like someone who wanted to make the news. No food, no water, no way to make a fire. Oh gee, I'm so lucky to have my cell phone. 6 PM, not dark, 150 meters from the trail head. Please send this person a bill.
