Andco Enterprises Ltd. has been tasked with making repairs to the Robert Campbell Bridge leading in and out of Riverdale.

City council voted to award the $307,000 contract to the local firm at its March 23 meeting.

While the bridge was widened last year to accommodate pedestrian and cyclist traffic, the main bridge deck last saw repairs in 2009.

A subsequent inspection in 2012, however, recommended concrete delamination repairs and a re-coating of the sealer.

“As the bridge ages, ongoing repairs are required to ensure that it is safe for public use,” city engineer Wayne Tuck stated in a report to council.

While six firms picked up tender documents on the work, only two bids came in.

Thomas Contracting’s submission was rejected because it wasn’t balanced, leaving Andco’s as the only bid to be considered.

Andco’s bid was more than the estimated $268,200.

However, as Tuck noted in response to Coun. Dave Stockdale at the March 23 meeting, the $307,000 is still within the budget approved.

As he also stated in his report to council: “Not awarding this contract would result in further deterioration of the bridge deck. In addition, delaying these maintenance repairs could potentially increase the need to replace the entire deck sooner than forecasted.”

The work is not slated to start until after the school year concludes, so there won’t be a major impact on traffic heading to and from the five schools in Riverdale. As well, it will be done in the evenings.

“At no time will the bridge be (completely) closed,” Tuck said at an earlier meeting, noting it will be down to one lane with priority given to emergency vehicles.

Mayor Dan Curtis attended the March 23 meeting by conference call.

Just for the record these projects have been in the five year capital plan to do and they are here now. All governments need to do a better job of showing the five year capital plans of governments. If people want to learn go to the government web sites and they should be there. The NDP and Liberals are good at making comments about projects that they don't know what they are talking about. One is a school teacher and the other was in administration of the Federal Government so they haven't knowledge in most subjects just wild meaningless statement that are not based in fact.
Don't even pay attention to their statements because they don't know what they are talking about. That is a fact because if they did they would not be making statements that make them look bad as politicians.

I'll break it down for you BnR. This city and government have a great reputation for awarding work to outside firms. When there is qualified people here to do the same thing. Both elections are coming up so you will see some local palms greased as they pretend to actually care about us locals. All just smoke and mirrors. Watch till after the elections. It will just go back to normal.

Great, more line ups. Why not just rip it out and use a ferry like in Ross? This city is a joke - build another bridge.
