Liberals continue to build their election lineup

The Yukon Liberals are announcing another high-profile candidate to run in this year’s territorial election.

By Aimee O'Connor on January 13, 2016

The Yukon Liberals are announcing another high-profile candidate to run in this year’s territorial election.

Ramesh Ferris, a longtime Yukoner and polio survivor, is now pursuing a seat in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

When he was just six months old in Coimbatore, India, Ferris contracted polio.

In 2008, Ferris launched his Cycle to Walk across Canada campaign – which saw him hand-cycle from Victoria to Cape Spear, NL and raise more than $300,000 toward polio eradication, education and rehabilitation.

Now a survivor of the disease, Ferris has travelled internationally to advocate for an eradication of the disease.

He has delivered his message to a host of notable figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, renowned scientist David Suzuki and education rights advocate Malala Yousafzai.

A press release indicates Ferris will declare which party under which he’s seeking a nomination at a press conference tomorrow morning, and identify the riding he’s interested in.

However, a source confirmed this morning that Ferris wants to run under the Yukon Liberal Party banner.

“The generosity of Yukon and its people has allowed me to walk. It is now time for me to give back and stand up for all Yukoners everywhere,” Ferris said in the release.

Last summer, former city councillor John Streicker announced his intent to run alongside former Yukon Party candidate Rod Taylor.

Streicker ran as a Green Party candidate in the 2011 federal election, garnering a notable 19 per cent of the territory’s vote.

Months before the territorial election in 2011, Taylor ran against Darrell Pasloski for the leadership of the Yukon Party, eventually losing to the current premier.

Later, a third politician entered the Liberal ring – Tamara Goeppel announced her intent to run with the Liberals in November 2015.

Previously, Goeppel had lobbied for a federal Liberal nomination in the fall of 2014.

Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver has previously noted that candidates and their respective ridings will be determined after an open nomination at this month’s annual general meeting.

The Liberals’ only government in the Yukon was elected in the spring of 2000.

Then-premier Pat Duncan and her party lost power to Dennis Fentie’s Yukon Party in the election held in late 2002.

I've known Ferris for some time now. Great advocate for polio awareness, but politically vacuous and completely out of touch with anything else. Feels entitled to politics as his ego and sense of entitlement have driven him there. Also until recently a member of the Yukon Party.

I will not be voting for him.

Ah yes, another election year in the Yukon. Once again the blue-collar unionized lefties and the white-collar elitist lefties can't cooperate to unite the opposition and turf-out the dictatorial right wing 'growth-at-any-cost' government that rules the Yukon. The opposition parties can't put aside their fragile egos and petty disagreements long enough to see that bigger issues like electoral reform and protecting the environment are far more important than their presumed differences. As long as the left continues to act like pigs-on-ice they won't demonstrate to the voting public that either are fit to govern, and the YP dynasty of incompetent tax-dollar bagmen will continue. Some things never change.

When all is said and done and the votes have been tallied, we'll get the government we deserve. So we can bitch for another five years. Whoever wins - they better be good money planner/managers.

re-elect photo op Elaine... you got to be kidding! Like all other YP she will be out of a job soon, and not soon enough.

When it comes to being power grubbers Moe, history shows that the YP and NDP are pretty much tied in that. They also both have an extensive old boys and girls club behind them. Just follow the money. The Libs aren't much better.

Not a fan of consensus government but between all three parties there exists a handful of decent and competent politicians that could do good for the Yukon if they formed a coalition government. The rest running are pretty much untrustworthy incompetents or completely out to lunch.

Re-electing Elaine Taylor would be so much better

I'm not the only one. on Jan 16, 2016 at 6:42 am

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can see through him and that he just wants attention and spotlight. Everything will be about him and him alone. I've known him way too many years. I will not be voting for him.

Then you have Rod Taylor who did not get the Yukon Party leadership on Jan 15, 2016 at 5:40 pm

and stated he would run for the Yukon Party but now has his focus on the liberal leadership.

If you would do the least amount of investigative journalism you'll find out he resigned from the Yukon Party just a few months ago when he didn't get what he wanted and the Liberals won nationally.

Anything for the spotlight, didn't we just see him all smiles on the front page with the former PM? Never trust someone who will turn views in a blink of the eye!

Interesting that Mr. Ferris is running for the Liberals as he up until 24 hours prior to a Liberal strategy meeting in Novemeber, was a member of the Yukon Party. Must have known the shop was sinking and decided to jump.

Whoever is going to protect the Peel and value our wilderness in general, pay attention to the 80% of Yukoners who are functional and who are keeping things running - not just the 20% who need help, and who will focus on diversifying our economy will get my vote.

A couple of well run mines providing jobs to Canadian workers is fine with me, but not at the risk of wiping out the Yukon River with an outlandish dam taller than the tallest building in Canada. There has to be balance.

And I am all for helping those that need help, like the addicts and the mentally ill, but too often those who are marching along trying to keep it together are forgotten about, specifically the working poor.

Right now I would vote NDP because I feel they are sincere more than anything else. The other two parties tend to be full of power grubbers who will say anything but in the end will rig the game toward their friends - Especially the Yukon Party.

There is not much alignment between the Federal parties and their Territorial counterparts. Yukoners need to vote for the best person/party regardless of the political stripe.

That said, the YP performance under the Paz has been lack luster, he's driven the Yukon Economy into the ditch. The fall election results will likely have the YP in 3rd place with one of the other 2 parties winning with a thin minority.

You NDP becoming leader of the Yukon Party. You liberal becoming Yukon Party members. You have this individual who used to support Party is now a liberal. What going on here? Is there any real politicians any more?

Should vote an NDP government in for the Territory. It's not good having a Liberal Federal Go Ernest and a Liberal Yukon Government..... Haven't Yukoners learned that from The past Conservatives and Yukon Party..... Pass whatever they want without listening to Yukon People?

Unfortunately.. and I mean I am really sad..." The Liberals’ only government in the Yukon was elected in the spring of 2000" and they might not get in this time either... I am not seeing a really strong line up so far.. One power house lady is not enough for them to carry the election. Although, on second thought I would not vote Conservative. or THIS Conservative government in again if they suddenly turned into a decent government.

Clearly the Liberals smell blood in the water. It is pretty easy to snatch headlines with new candidate announcements when you had only one MLA to start with, though. I'm curious to see how the NDP respond.
