A Whitehorse man has been sentenced to 30 months in jail for operating a meth lab in the basement of his mother’s Riverdale home.

Trevor Mendham, 24, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of production and possession of methamphetamine.

Last February, the Whitehorse Fire Department responded to a call from Mendham’s residence on Alsek Road.

The caller said a television set had caught fire.

Upon investigation, evidence of suspicious chemicals consistent with meth production was discovered.

Mendham wasn’t charged with trafficking because he was making the drug to support a personal habit rather than for re-sale.

This was the first recorded case of a meth lab in Whitehorse.

That was alluded to by Mendham’s lawyer, Melissa Atkinson, who said the charges add a page to Yukon legal history.

Mendham was also charged with theft and breach for stealing lithium batteries from a grocery store and fleeing the RCMP in June.

During his decision, Judge Peter Chisolm said the court took the charges very seriously.

“The drug is a highly addictive drug,” he said.

The chemicals required to make meth are both dangerous and highly explosive, he noted.

Chisolm said it was difficult not to sympathize with Mendham, who started using meth recreationally seven years ago, and who has a history of addiction.

However, he said, the gravity of the situation is high.

He accepted a joint submission of 30 months.

When Chisolm asked Mendham if he wanted to speak to the court, Mendham’s response was almost unintelligible.

“I’m an addict,” he said. “I couldn’t help myself.”

“He’s feeling a bit emotional right now,” said Atkinson.

Her client had told her he was apologetic and remorseful, she added.

Mendham will receive credit for five months and 24 days already served. That leaves him with a remaining sentence of 24 months and seven days.

That time will be served in a federal penitentiary.

It's so sad this is not being treated as a medical problem rather than a criminal matter. Sending him to prison only will entrench his criminal behavior, not cure it. Prisons do not have adequate programs to solve the personal issues that cause this. But then lots of people making lots of money off prisons so why would we want to cure drug addicts?

Guess they had to set a harsh precedent.
If they low balled the sentence everybody would be making meth.
Kinda a shame for the guy if he is an addict and all.

Meth addiction is the devil personified; there are very few, if any effective treatments available - especially in the Yukon. Perhaps that was part of appeal of being in a larger, federal prison. This is a young man who faces a hell of a battle to claim his life back and the comment section here is half people sniping at each other. Maybe find some compassion for him, his family and friends instead of justifying your own opinion.

@ Mark Sanders....I think you're on drugs with your comment. So with your line of reason then, if I grow 30 or 40 pot plants because I smoke an ounce of dope a week, I should not be charged because it is for my consumption and not for sale?
You do realize that this drug addict just cost his mother her home right? The house will have to be destroyed now due to contamination by the chemicals.
I've been a cigarette smoker for 37 years now with no intention of quitting anytime soon. Smokers are persecuted every single day because of our addiction. Do we blame anyone or anything else? No! Smokers are paying for the medical system in a big way. To have sympathy for a drug addict is a colossal waste of effort.T hey have nothing but costs to offer society.
This drug addict will get treatment in the federal Pen. I as a smoker will just keep on paying and paying so that fat people will never have to worry about treatments or donuts ever!
This guy is lucky that all he got was 2 years. For that he should be thankful.

To RNR: Why are you attacking my opinions instead of offering something of your own on the topic? Because addiction is considered a legal health issue and therefore mandated for taxpayer dollars doesn't mean I think addicts should get away with murder, or break and enters, or get away with home made meth labs, or anything else. It simply means we legally have to pay for their issues. As for the mountain climbers, they went into territory they should not have gone into, they did not prepare for their venture, they did not tell anyone where they intended to go, etc. They were stupid. And as I said, to the best of my knowledge stupid is not considered a legal health issue... at this time.

Hey June, Is this where you got your inspiration? - "Gonna write a classic, Gonna write it in an attic, Babe I'm an addict now, An addict for your love". Adrian Gurvitz ( circa 1982 ) .

This sentence was to harsh and should be appealed.
This guy built a lab for making his own drugs and a few sales to people. He was not collecting welfare or asking for handouts.

Many people buy drugs in Yukon why punish a young man with addiction and ambition.

June, your comments on this story surprise me.
In the story on the two hikers who were reduced in Skagway, you responded to my hypothetical statements of health care not covering smokers or obese people with the claim that these are diseases etc.
Now here, when discussing drug addictions (which are no less a disease than smoking addiction or obesity, your words remember?) you are all about throwing them in jail to rot etc. And remember, we are dealing with a self admitted addict here, not a trafficker, which is a big difference.
Do you have any continuity with your stance on addictions, or is it pretty much whatever way the wind blows?

what a joke on Aug 24, 2016 at 5:11 pm

What a joke with the sentencing, comparing what has been in the news lately. Beat a teen to death, no worries spend some time in a youth hostel, molest some kids and actively pursue kiddie porn, all good let's hope your rights aren't violated.
Shaking my damn head.
Have a meth lab in your moms house, with no real quantity listed by the police upon arrest nor any mention if this person was a first time offender, etc. and he goes to a federal pen. Great idea. Should have claimed the residential school defense but I guess it wouldn't work in his case.
Yukon judges have a funny way of applying the criminal code...

Building a meth lab for your own use? Yup.. and I have a bridge for sale... criminals will say anything and do anything.

I have no sympathy for addicts liquor, drugs.. anything, they never want to change, they never want to have a better life, and never do a thing to help themselves. I'm an addict so I can break into your house and steal everything you worked all your life for and society will go real easy because..I'm an addict..I couldn't help myself.. I'm an addict so I can shoplift and drive the prices up, I'm an addict I can steal and wreck your car, run down your children drunk driving..and not too much will happen because the judge will feel sympathy.. I'm an addict.

If someone wants to help themselves, I will be the first one to help you... show up at rehab and work at it...otherwise.. spend your life in federal penitentiary with the big boys, at least you aren't in my community for 2 years.

Justice is served? on Aug 24, 2016 at 2:48 pm

Oh good. Send him south so he can learn how to run a bigger operation.
I'm surprised at the sentence he did get. He got more than some murderers, rapists and child molesters.
