Most of the Yukon firefighters sent to B.C. will remain there for some time yet.

That was the word today from Devon Seaman, a Yukon Wildland Fire Management information officer Seaman said 12 of the 50 Yukon firefighters sent south to assist and one of the seven management staff have returned over the last few days.

But most will remain in B.C. until the end of the month, he said.

Meanwhile, in the Yukon, the fire danger rating is low to moderate.

Whitehorse, for instance, is moderate.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to high-teens, with the chance of isolated showers but no lightning.

One new fire was reported Monday in the Watson Lake region, but is expected to be out today.

Also remaining in B.C. is one airtanker group from the Yukon and 50 fire pumps loaned to the province earlier this summer as wildfires continued to devastate areas near communities.

There have been 112 fires in the Yukon so far this summer, burning a total of 330,324 hectares.

Of the total number of fires, 19, or about 16 per cent, were human-caused, while the rest were started by lightning.
