ANOTHER CANDIDATE-HOPEFUL – Former city councillor Mike Gladish announced yesterday that he will be seeking the Yukon Liberals' nomination for Mountainview riding in the next territorial election.

Another former city councillor is attempting to segue from municipal to territorial politics.

Mike Gladish, who served on city council from 2012 to 2015, has declared his intent to run with the Yukon Liberal Party in the upcoming election.

In an interview this morning, Gladish explained his decision to seek a nomination with the Liberals.

“I feel like I learned a lot from city politics. This would be a way of using that experience in a way that gives me some fulfillment over the next four years,” he said.

He also noted that he is retiring from work managing the Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club.

In a press release Tuesday, Gladish noted he is seeking a Liberal nomination in the riding of Mountainview – the riding held by Premier Darrell Pasloski since 2011.

But Gladish does not find this intimidating – yet.

“My main plan at this point is to knock on doors in the riding ... and connect with people,” he said.

“After getting nominated, then I can worry about Darrell.”

Gladish has lived in the territory for 35 years, many of which have been spent in the Mountainview riding.

“I feel like I know the riding, and the job is representing people in the riding to make sure their views are listened to.”

When asked about issues of importance to him, Gladish explained that the Liberal team will eventually develop a platform, and he’ll present his viewpoints at that time.

For now, declaring the intent to run is the “first baby step” Gladish is prepared to take.

He is the sixth person to announce intent to join the Yukon Liberals for this election campaign. The others so far include former city councillor John Streicker, Rod Taylor, Tamara Goeppel, Ramesh Ferris and Russ Hobbis.

All those seeking political office should be given a mandatory psychological test.

The Liberal Party of Yukon is looking more and more like Yukon Party Left-of-Center.

I do not like Mike's addiction to his own point of view, but at least he's honest.

Wish we had more to choose from on Feb 11, 2016 at 11:59 am

I wish we had more candidates to choose from in all areas. It's unfortunate that some of the Liberal candidates are not people I would ever vote for. Goppel and Streiker are strong, the others I'm not so impressed with. Better choose your representatives carefully Sandy...the election and change in government depends on strong candidates from Libs and NDP.

Wished I lived in his riding so I could vote for him, also voting out Paslawski would be icing on the cake.

I'll second Alan Miners comment. We need more politicians willing to take the unpopular stands as opposed to the stands which will get them re-elected.

I hope Mike is successful.
No politician is perfect of course. Mike works hard and is not afraid to take a stand even if it's unpopular.
