Deputy premier confirms her plans

Elaine Taylor wants to stay in politics.

Elaine Taylor wants to stay in politics.

Only weeks before the probable calling of a territorial election, the minister of Tourism and Culture said today she will again seek the Yukon Party nomination in Whitehorse West.

She has represented the riding since 2002, when former Yukon Party premier Dennis Fentie’s first of two governments was elected.

“As a member of the legislative assembly and minister, I have worked on a wide variety of matters and have gained invaluable experience in addressing issues of importance to my constituents and that of advancing government policies and legislation for the betterment of our territory,” Taylor said in a statement.

It points out she has worked on a number of issues important to residents residing in the Arkell, Copper Ridge, Logan and Ingram neighbourhoods, including:

• the completion of the Hamilton Boulevard extension;

• the construction of the new Emergency Response Centre;

• furthering the development of neighbourhood parks such as Lazulite Park;

• making land available and advancing affordable housing initiatives; and

• modernizing the Condominium Act to meet the volume and complexity of today’s marketplace

Taylor, who grew up in Watson Lake, is the deputy premier. She is also the minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate and for French Language Services within the government.

“I am fully committed to serving my constituency and our territory, and will continue to work hard to advance issues of importance on Yukoners’ behalf in support of a strong economy, high quality of life and a bright future for all,” Taylor added.

Former journalist Richard Mostyn is the Liberals’ candidate in Whitehorse West.

No potential NDP candidate has publicly emerged.

Confirmation of Taylor’s plans leaves Economic Development Minister Stacey Hassard as the only minister who has not publicly indicated whether he will run again.

Ministers Doug Graham and Currie Dixon are planning to leave politics.

It's better left unsaid if you have to be so nasty. I'm disappointed in you, Yukoners! and for The Star for printing such.

Elaine, I'm sure you smile and seem nice to everyone when you go to the door, however you can't deny that you are the right hand (Deputy Premier) of this worn out Yukon Party government that is long past its best before date. You must have been present when decisions were made to run roughshod over all of Yukon's First Nations, which landed us in court and put a serious barrier up to mining and all development. You and your government can't get along with anyone it seems from the City, to First Nations to the federal Government.

You must also have been present for all of the sketchy back room deals like the gift of tax payer money to the golf course, Brad Cathers cancelling the affordable housing deal (which was supported by the City, NGOs and the private sector), sole sourcing a $2.1 million deal to some local telecom companies and the list could go on forever.

SO do tell why anyone should vote for you given this record and a fake smile at the door from a career politician?

What have you accomplished, Elaine? on Aug 2, 2016 at 8:25 am

Photo op minister is right. What exactly have you done to help Yukoners? So you worked on a bunch of files. Who hasn't? Did you accomplish anything in all these years? Tourism sucks, the PSC is rampant with overpaid and ineffective (especially top management) workers, Watson Lake is on the map because of murder, drugs, and what else? Nope, it's not economic development. Not your constituency, I know. Women are no further ahead than they were 30 years ago in the Yukon. What have you done, Elaine? What? Really, how have you contributed to a better life for Yukoners???

Ministry of Tourism? What a waste of tax dollars. About the only tourists I see are the ones who drive through to Alaska and the few who park their half million dollar rigs at Walmart. If the ministry counted the ones who actually stay for a day or so, they could be counted on their fingers and toes and still have some left over. I was in Skagway early July. They get more tourists in one day, than Whitehorse gets in one year. Four large tour ships in the harbour on any given day. Now that's tourism. So, Elaine, find another ministry.

I mean really what else would she do? She came onto the scene with the 100 vote King and his prince as the princess from an economically depressed community and nothing there has changed since. " • making land available and advancing affordable housing initiatives; and
" Was she on vacation when Minister Blathers killed 3 housing initiatives due to pressure for the illustrious Real estate agents who were afraid of housing prices and their profits going down? That's advancement? Definitely need some fresh enthusiasm in the legislature instead of continued wheel spinning.
