Dancers’ conduct had liquor authorities seeing red

Club 867, Whitehorse’s newest party venue,

By Christopher Reynolds on March 4, 2015

Club 867, Whitehorse’s newest party venue, violated liquor provisions with exotic dancers and “offensive conduct” several times throughout last month’s Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival, earning it a 48-hour licence suspension.

The five-month-old nightclub attached to the Ramada Inn twice permitted “exotic dancing within the required one-metre barrier of an audience,” according to the Yukon Liquor Corp.

The two incidents, which breached what is effectively part of a “no-touching” rule, occurred on the festival’s opening and closing days, Feb. 18 and Feb. 23.

Club 867 also advertised the fleshy affairs without permission from the corporation’s president, a requirement under Yukon Liquor Act regulations.

That contravention happened Feb. 23, the same evening it was “allowing riotous, disorderly or offensive conduct” on the premises, the liquor corporation states in its case summary.

The business was served with a two-day penalty Feb. 23 for the four violations.

“Typically that means the operation shuts down for that period of time, but that’s not what’s enforced; what’s enforced is they’re not allowed to sell alcohol,” said Mark Hill, the liquor corporation’s vice-president of operations.

Hill said discovery of the breaches was “complaint-driven,” though inspectors are also out in force during Rendezvous.

Yukon Liquor Board policy states that “exotic entertainment ... includes but is not limited to exotic dancing and strip tease.”

The board also says territorial legislation “prohibits offensive conduct, immoral performances and indecent acts.”

Club 867 promoted exotic dancers, like “Vienna Venom,” on its Facebook page in the lead-up to Feb. 18 and throughout the week.

One post from Feb. 17 features photos of two dancers, including the Edmonton-based Venom — presumably not her real surname — in faux-leather lingerie.

Venom’s stated interest in quinoa recipes and “holidays at home” — visible on her Pinterest page — were not evidenced in the posts.

The lusty performances followed wet T-shirt contests at the operation prior to Rendezvous.

Yvonne Benoit owns and manages the nightclub, which typically features DJs, local bands or salsa dancing.

Raised partly in Faro, Benoit has thanked her mother for helping make the business a reality. She was one of eight co-workers in Faro to win a $25-million Lotto Max jackpot in 2013, paving the way for investment in Club 867.

Benoit did not respond to phone calls Monday or Tuesday. Her voicemail was full.

The nightclub, which opened last October, is located near the corner of Second and Fourth avenues.

The liquor licence suspensions were the first recorded in the Yukon since last June, when Carcross Grocer was slapped with a penalty for selling booze to a drunk person.

Club 867’s four infractions alone quadruple the number of incidents that resulted in “enforcement actions” in 2014 and in 2013.

the names of those informers should be made public or at least available upon request to those they are informing on. Unfortunately, the identities of these cowards are protected.

I think the moral outrage is a bit misdirected. What took place in that beer parlour during Rendezvous before an audience of Yukoners 19 years of age or older was quite tame and does not compare to what can be seen down along the riverbank in the summertime, the day after the pogey cheques are issued. Those performances are in front of the local public of all ages and our visitors from afar to witness. Liquor is involved in those displays as well - yet little is done to clean up those acts.

Fans of the sport will remember Ms. Mitsy DuPree who was disenfranchised for shooting ping pong balls out at the patrons.

The very idea that the Liquor Board have any moral compass on this is unutterably laughable. Mark Hill knows nothing relevant. He used to be at the Education Dept during its hopeless Elaine Taylor 'leadership'. At least the Liquor Board has learnt how to stack bottles of whiskey properly now - 50 thousand in lost revenue after last year's little , er, mishap takes some beating !

The question is, who keeps reporting these things at this specific club? I bet it's one person. Smells like revenge or something to me.

What's does mom winning the lotto have to do with her opening the bar..who's business is that anyways? I think people should focus on the good things the club and owner has also done...I'm sure being first time club owner she's just like anyone else, is not perfect and cannot control others actions.. .

The Yukon Liquor Corp/Board should not be in the morality enforcement business.
If you don't like strippers, then don't go to a strip club - problem solved.

Maybe time to get one of those 'Save the Peelers' bumper stickers.

Have you all lost your moral compass? Watch some more Jerry Springer - there is enough in our daily lives to rust your morals. Letting an outside tour biz tell us how or what they want us to be wow! Get a grip people.

I am sure those young girls who were on stage with wet t-shirts will think twice when they see their pictures, which were taken without their permission, posted online with rude comments.

Where do we send the donations to help the owner of the establishment with her losses for the 48 hours??? It happens once a year Mr. Inspector and in an establishment with 100% consenting adults. Discretion (aka: a blind eye), would have been the right move here.

Questioning authority on Mar 4, 2015 at 5:21 pm

These liquor inspectors should practise enforcing the rules equally among bars. Last year two bars got suspensions for dancer related violations and only one of them actually paid the penalty of closing down. I question the veracity of the statement that they are only responding to complaints. I'll bet the people who were there were not complaining. So who could these nebulous complainers be?

Just wondering if the liquor inspectors ever check out the other lovely bars in town ? The one famous for the gold rush comes to mind. Burlesque shows no drug dealers and fights okay! Get your priorities straight.

This article is very misleading. Nerium is a face cream, its for anti-aging. There is nothing lewd or inappropriate about that.

Wow...we are a puritanical lot in the Yukon. What happened to the legend of Gerty, Klondike Kate and Bombay Peggy? Is that not what was being celebrated? Are those in the bar not of legal age to see some skin? Ohhh. They entered the crowd. May we all be damned to he**.

It's a strange mix of loosening the rules with one hand, and gripping them tighter with the other. Sure would be nice for the government to allow adults the latitude to do what they desire (pun intended) as long as it doesn't harm another.

“allowing riotous, disorderly or offensive conduct” oh please.... that used to be the byline for Rendezvous!

... at last something to attract the tourist. I suspect it will be more profitable than the zip-line at Sima.

... and late breaking news out of Alaska has it that Holland America is rumored to be considering having the buses not stop in Carcross this summer but coming to Whitehorse and Club 867 for a real northern experience.
