Two orphaned cubs, one female and one male from the Yukon, made a safe journey Friday to their new home in Calgary, the Calgary Zoo reports.

The cubs were orphaned in mid-July after their garbage-devouring mother was shot in residential Whitehorse.

The territorial government helped place the cubs in Calgary after they were taken temporarily to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.

They will remain at the zoo’s Animal Health Centre for their quarantine period, the zoo said in a statement.

“Having survived an initial health scare, they will be further assessed during this period by our veterinary staff,” the zoo said.

“Once quarantine has ended, they will then be slowly introduced to our white black bear Manuka.

“Together, these three bears will be able to educate our visitors about the dangers of animals becoming habituated to humans.”

Curator Jamie Dorgan said staff are “delighted to receive these two black bear cubs and are optimistic that they will become good companions for our lone white black bear Manuka.”

Air North provided the transportation for the cubs.

The Calgary Zoo is a conservation leader whose mission is to take and inspire action to sustain wildlife and wild places.

As a not-for-profit charitable institution, all revenue is reinvested back into conservation activities at the zoo and around the world.
