City is owed $155,506 in taxes, interest

Owners of 64 properties

By Stephanie Waddell on January 12, 2017

Owners of 64 properties could soon find their names published as part of the city’s list of those owing property taxes.

On Monday evening, city CEO Valerie Braga proposed that council approve the annual tax lien list detailing the names of property owners and the amount owed for each property.

The list is released annually.

This year’s outstanding balance on taxes as well as interest owed is $155,506. That’s nearly $5,000 less than last year’s total of $160,420.

The amounts currently owed range from $132 to $18,199.

It’s expected the list would be published in a local newspaper by Feb. 17 and updated just before publication to avoid listing property owners who pay their bills prior to the publication date.

If the bill continues to go unpaid for 60 days after publication, the city could take further action, Braga said.

“Each property is levied an administration fee and will be subject to further collection procedures if the account is not paid within 60 days,” she noted.

“Those steps include initial application for title to the property after 12 months and final application for title to the mediation board after a further six months.

“If the taxes remain outstanding, the title to the property is transferred to the city and, assuming the city has no use for the property, it is disposed of at fair market value, with any surplus returned to the previous owner.”

It would be great if next year there were hundreds and hundreds of Whitehorse taxpayers refusing to pay their tax bills due to the undemocratic spending spree that CoW is all about.

Big Brother...the names of all persons convicted of a crime including drunk drivers are published. You are complaining that they are not published before conviction. Same goes for the tax cheats....there is a process that would have to be followed to get to this point where their names are published. Don't worry the law is pretty clear on what can and cannot be published.

If the city gets it's hands on this 155 large they will only squander it on something frivolous for the new resort area that's not required in the first place.

So the names of drunk drivers who put other people's lives in danger can't be published but if you owe taxes to big brother all bets are off and into the newspaper your name goes...
