A Whitehorse taxi driver is facing charges of allegedly sexually assaulting two female passengers.

Jaspal Singh Tamber, 25, was arrested last Tuesday. He was charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of kidnapping.

Whitehorse RCMP said last Friday afternoon that earlier the previous Tuesday, they had received complaints from two women about separate but similar incidents.

The women, aged 30 and 19, claimed to have been sexually assaulted by a male taxi driver while they were passengers in his vehicle on Sept. 29.

In both cases, the women said, they were walking in Whitehorse when they were approached by a male taxi driver who identified himself as “Jazz”.

He offered them a ride even after they told him they weren’t able to pay.

Driven to rest area

One of the women alleged that she had been driven to a rest area and sexually assaulted.

Tamber appeared in court in Whitehorse last Wednesday and was remanded into custody.

Investigators believe there could be other victims or witnesses in the community who have not yet come forward.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5555.

For those preferring to remain anonymous, sexualized assaults can also be reported to the RCMP through a third-party reporting option.

RCMP can use this information and “take actions that are appropriate.”

Third party reporting can be accessed by any victim aged 19 and older through the Kaushee’s Place 24-hour crisis line at 668-5733.

A video from the Together for Safety video also provides information on other options available for victims of sexualized assault.

Are they checked by the RCMP for previous criminal records - are they bonded? I am so lucky that I do not have to use taxi's.

Let the guy have his day in court before heaping shame on him and making judgements about taxi drivers.

Advice to the alleged perp - he should make sure he has the very best lawyer he can buy or he will be convicted regardless of the evidence.

Wouldn't even think of getting into some of those taxis. Just looking at them and some drivers makes you think twice.
Does Whitehorse not have any legislation for taxis? Think of those poor seniors needing a ride.....
I myself needed a ride from YK Inn to hospital - $14.00. Little much I'd say!
No standard, next trip was 11.00
I walked the next time. Various $ for various taxis
