A 17-year-old charged in connection with the theft of several bicycles from Cadence Cycle has been released on an undertaking.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the teen’s name cannot be published.

He was released on conditions at a bail hearing on Saturday, Whitehorse RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland said today.

Fourteen bicycles and miscellaneous items were stolen from the downtown bike shop earlier this month.

Owner Dean Eyre told the Star at the time the value of the stolen goods was more than $50,000. It was about one-third of his inventory.

Whitehorse RCMP received a tip from the public about the bikes, and on July 16, located four of them, as well as some bike parts, at a home in the city.

They issued an arrest warrant for the suspect, and arrested him at 6:20 p.m. last Thursday.

Eyre said today he knows the teen, who came by Cadence last week to apologize. He then brought the suspect to the RCMP with the suspects cooperation.

Police kept the bikes – a Salsa, Soda, and two specialized Cambers – for processing, but they’ve since been returned to the bike shop.

They cost between $1,800 and $5,000 each, Hoogland said.

The other 10 bicycles have not yet been recovered, though Eyre said a couple of them were spotted Friday in Carcross.

“We’re always hopeful,” Eyre said. “I don’t know what we’ll get back, but they’re still floating around.”

The theft was a “significant loss,” he said.

The bikes aren’t replaceable. Eyre wouldn’t have the cash flow to replace them even if they were.

He won’t be bringing in new stock to fill out his inventory.

“It’s too late in the season,” he said. “We end up losing the profit. We might get covered for replacement costs, but what we would have made, the things that actually finance the store’s existence, you don’t get that back.”

Hoogland said police are still investigating the theft.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5551.
