Air North president Joe Sparling

Air North turns away flight attendants this morning

Tensions between Air North and its unionized flight attendants are already escalating.

By Chuck Tobin on September 30, 2014

Tensions between Air North and its unionized flight attendants are already escalating.

Air North president Joe Sparling said he was piloting yesterday evening’s Boeing 737 return flight to Vancouver when two of the three flight attendants showed up in T-shirts with “smart-ass remarks” on them and refused to perform their duties.

Instead, Sparling said, the two flight attendants sat down and were handing out what he described as propaganda to Air North customers.

“In my mind it was the most disrespectful and shameful performance that I have seen,” he said. “I have no appetite for that.”

One of the three did fulfill her or his duties, he said.

Sparling said he rejected three flight attendants this morning who showed up in the same T-shirts instead of their company uniforms, and replaced them with three of eight attendants the company has trained over the last month.

Air North will respect the rights of any flight attendants who show up for work properly uniformed and willing to perform their duties, he said.

Otherwise, he added, the company will use the recently trained attendants and management staff to service the flights.

Air North prides itself on customer service, and yesterday’s performance was nowhere near company standards, said the company president.

Sparling said the manager of flight attendants who also works as a full-time attendant was on this morning’s flight, for instance.

The airline’s 25 to 30 regular attendants unionized in February 2013 and began negotiating their first collective agreement last October.

Union president Steve Geick of the Yukon Employees Union said Monday 85 per cent of the flight attendants voted in support of a strike mandate. Air North was given the 72-hour mandatory notice Friday morning, putting the union in a strike position Monday morning, he explained.

Geick said the company was informed union members have chosen to conduct job action at this point to emphasize their frustration over the length of time it’s taking to reach an agreement, instead of full strike action.

The job action includes the withdrawal of non-essential in-flight food and beverage service, though attendants will help passengers who need assistance and will conduct their safety briefings and other safety-related duties, says a union press release.

Geick said this morning Air North issued a statement just yesterday indicating it supported the right of attendants to conduct job action, but today the company seems to be singing a different tune.

The union president said he was on Monday evening’s Vancouver flight and noted management staff who were serving customers did not have uniforms, and did not have anything identifying them as flight attendants, as required by regulation.

The T-shirt worn by the regular attendants do identify them as attendants, he said.

Geick said the union also respects the rights of those attendants who do not chose to follow the majority of their colleagues and instead do what they feel they need to do. Job action is not the same as a full-blown strike with a picket line, he said.

Geick said the union is always prepared to negotiate.

Sparling noted his frustration again this morning over the job action occurring while negotiations are continuing, with a session scheduled for next week with federal mediator Kathy Peter.

The company trained the eight new attendants over the last month in anticipation of this situation, and may have to advertise for more positions, depending on the ongoing negotiations, he explained.

He said as a result of the job action on a charter flight out of Edmonton into the Oil Patch yesterday, he may be looking for three attendants in Edmonton to replace three Whitehorse attendants.

The oil company that chartered the flight wants nothing to do with the job action taken on the flight, and as a result, Air North had to hire another airline company to fly the charter, Sparling said.

He said Air North was assured charter flights would not be affected.

The union is seeking a wage increase, among other issues such as a guaranteed number of working hours every month and paid sick leave and vacation leave.

The current wage and benefit package is well below industry standards, the union maintains.

Sparling said the company has about 500 employees, of which 250 to 300 are stationed in Whitehorse with the majority of others located in Vancouver.

The flight attendants are the only segment of Air North’s workforce who are unionized.

The company estimates it flies between 15,000 and 20,000 passengers per month.

It was only a matter of time before the union head brainwashed the FA's into voting for strike action. Most unionized workers are afraid to say anything against their union. I worked for Canada Post for 10 years and had no problem going to union meetings and telling them exactly what I thought of their views. Maybe give the FA's their raise and take away their free flights. They are well paid when you consider their hourly rate, benefits and free flights. They can always go work for WestJet or AC. Unions had their place 100 years ago but most are too radical now. Is the union president ever out of work? Don't let the union brainwash you, tell them what you think of their ideas. They are only bullies and you can bully them back.

Big Unions taking on a little Yukon Co? Shame on the Union! No-wonder why many reject the idea of being unionized. It is OK for AC's employees to have a union due to its disgusting management tactics ... but Air North? Come on!

Every one loves Joe and AirNorth, including the flight Attendants. They would not be doing work to rule if there were not problems. Negotiations for a year with no movement. Don't judge these flight attendants when you do not know the full story. Even Joe has an obligation to treat his employees with respect and provide for fair working conditions.

Air north staff should not be paid "industry standards" What is that anyway?
They should be paid market value. This means that as long as there are other qualified people standing in line for those jobs, then they are paying enough!

I think the flight attendants and the 'union' should start up their own company from the ground up and pay themselves whatever they want. Or....they should be so outstanding they could ask for a raise themselves and deserve it....I'm sure they would get it. Or....find some other job that pays the wage you feel you deserve. Become self reliant.

If the conditions were so bad, how come some of them have been there since Air North expanded? Why not quit? I just don't get it.

I hope now they work in to their negotiations decreased flight benefits to staff. You have to admit, they get it pretty good for the friends and family travel benefits on Air North. That's not something my job gives and I make about the same wage as them. In fact, my job has NO BENEFITS even close to that.

FA's I hope that the 1.5% raise you receive, and the revocation of free perks gets you where you want to be.
See this for what it is. Air North is not a forever job for most FA's, its a foot in the door, a training opportunity...Use it for what it is.
When you were hired you went in knowing what was expected, and you did it anyways. So now it's not good enough?
And as for the company training scabs? Even in the Yukon Government one does not have to belong to the union, you still pay the dues, and those are redirected to a charity.
FA's, you are going to get what you paid for...and that's pretty sad for all.

Apparently the t-shirts had Joe's phone number and email address on it.

Did Geick orchestrate this move? Whomever did really should not be in any position that required decision making because the optics on that are beyond bush league.

Next time I see Joe around the rink, I'll be sure to let him know I fully support AirNorth.

YEUnion tactic has long reaching affects on business in Yukon on Oct 1, 2014 at 1:54 pm

I am flying to Ottawa on Air North on Sunday. I hope they have food because I have to eat for health reasons. The Yukon Employees Union does not realize the image and impact this action has on the Yukon economy. Businesses that are planning on investing in the Yukon and see this type of action by unions will think again about setting up business in the Yukon.
I have been in discussion with a company that is looking at the Yukon to develop a business which will employ about sixty five people but are now concerned about what is taking place. This job action is having negative impact on our economic future as well as Air North.

They do an exceptional job, considering what they have to put up with. Especially the ones being trained. I think they have every right to strike and demand a pay hike as they are the lowest paid in the industry. No uniform, well that's another show.

Recently, the other major airlines advised passengers of various baggage fees, i.e. charging for 1st and or 2nd bag. Air North said they would not follow suit. Perhaps, if they were to charge for the 2nd piece of luggage they could help offset increasing wage requests. Then again why not charge for the 1st piece as well. If it is being done by both WJ and AC then it is a no brainer to follow suit.

These 'air waitresses' need to get a handle on their deluded sense of entitlement. These type of service industry jobs require no post secondary education. In the case of Air North they get great benefits (free travel) and while I agree that they should get paid for all the hours they work I don't see their job being anymore than a $15/hour job.

If I was Joe, I'd clawback their free access to flights as well.

The "tactics" of the flight attendants made me laugh a little. One would think if you really were looking for community support you would show up dressed as usual and work as normal then hand out your "propaganda". The people receiving it would then have been enamored, as is usually the case on Air North, with your service and much more receptacle to your information and cause.
Instead they have chosen to dressed poorly, piss people off by not providing service and expect you to join their cause. Sure some people will direct the negativity to the airline rather than the unionized flight attendants but my guess is that it will be a very small percentage of young people. Older individuals would just see this as straight up disrespectful, which it actually is. Also very curious what the smart ass remarks were.

The union representative is obviously playing politics, something unfortunately Joe isn't likely so good at doing. However this is the land of the midnight sun so perhaps people will appreciate his frankness. I on the other hand enjoy politics and feel the need to deconstruct the union officials comments which really should be called misrepresentations or lies.
Geick said this morning Air North issued a statement just yesterday indicating it supported the right of attendants to conduct job action.

Actually "Sparling said this morning he is disappointed but not mad that the 25 to 30 attendants have chosen to take job action" that's kind of a stretch from supporting. An even further stretch as at the time of the comment I am sure Joe didn't think the staff would be wearing disrespectful t-shirts and handing out "propaganda".

Geick said the company was informed union members have chosen to conduct job action at this point to emphasize their frustration over the length of time it’s taking to reach an agreement.
Little do the employees know its really you who have been holding things up. "Yukon Employees Union has been at the table for almost a year, negotiators for the flight attendants put their wage proposal on the table just two weeks ago" But I guess that's playing politics take your constituencies anger and frustration and direct at you opposition.

"The union president said he was on Monday evening’s Vancouver flight and noted management staff who were serving customers did not have uniforms, and did not have anything identifying them as flight attendants, as required by regulation." That's because said Management staff were likely not anticipating having to work as a flight attendant and had not had a flight attendant uniform fitted and on standby. I mean looking from the outside in this is true customer service individuals in the company going above and beyond to try and provide their customers with the service they are used to despite the disrespectful acts of your union members who logically should be mad at you for taking a year to develop a proposal for wage increase. Cudos to the Air North managers who stood up.

"Geick said the union is always prepared to negotiate." Right but your not allowed to negotiate without the federal mediator you called in present, so that's a meaningless statement. What is more you asked for a federal mediator even before you tried to negotiate wages. So to pretend that is the other party who is unwilling to negotiate is extremely dishonest. The YUE obviously thinks that it has enough backing to drag this out. I do wonder if YTG employees are comfortable with YUE using their union fees to support the cost of this lengthy negotiation.

My personal opinion is that the flight attendants were right to demand better wages but that using a union that is frankly well known for its shenanigans and silly disrespectful tactics like this to do so is just plain wrong. Not only does this negatively effect the reputation of the company you work for but also flight attendants in particular. Not to mention the affect it will likely have the # of people flying on the airline. Which really in turn hurts flight attendants, as the company might end up flying less meaning that flight attendants will have to be laid off.

They should have gathered the 90% that voted for the union and walked up to Joe and asked for a wage increase. There is yet another uncovered tid-bit for everyone before voting for a union no demands for a wage increase were made by the flight attendants to Management. Makes you wondering if YUE was whispering sweet nothings into someone's ear after they overheard them complaining. Of course promises from a union are like promises from a politician, meaningless.

We are proud of this airline and support it with fervor not only because it represents our pride in the Yukon, but because it ACTUALLY DELIVERS.

I hope that both sides can come together and get operations back in line. We are not used to seeing unconventional "picket" style stuff from operating employees... yes it's unprofessional, but that's the point.
In the same breath, I'm proud of what Sparling has brought to us.

I'm not okay with vacation days being used to fill employment gaps, and I'm sure there are more reasons, but I sincerely hope that the union gets a fair shake without making itself look bad, and our airline look bad.
I'm proud of you all and am sitting on the edge of my seat. Hopefully that next seat is yours.

Then I'd pay them in Canadian Tire or Monopoly money.

I'd walk south before I ever flew AreoFlot I mean Air Canada.
Any flight I had with your company was a good one, with my trip home from a medi-vac the best!
Be a damn shame if "a" union could destroy everything you and your crews have built with sweat equity over the years.
Unions served a purpose many moons ago when canaries were in the coal mines and this Whitehorse Star was a new company.
Today however IMHO they serve themselves via their members.

Who owns Air North and the impacts on Sep 30, 2014 at 9:21 pm

People don't forget who owns Air North Yukon investors including First Nations 49% ownership. This is the peoples airline of the Yukon. We do not need big business Unions coming to the Yukon to tell Yukoner's how to run their business. Air North is a local grown company that services Yukon interest. Unions have lost their way a long time go in Canada and the purpose of unions are not helping employees or business but creating more problems than they solve.
The Union Employees Union is very disappointing in understanding the future of the Yukon. You have West Jet coming into the Yukon in the summer and taking advantage of the busy season profits. I do not like how the Yukon Employees Union operates. It will not permit its members from looking at its books to see where the Union dues are spent. What does the Yukon Employees Union have to hide? The teacher's Union provides each member line by line of where they spend their money. Why can't the Yukon Employees Union do the same and open their books for every one to see?

Flight attendants play an important role so their wages/benefits should be at pare with the industry. It is all too common in the service industry, to pay the front line workers a low wage, the waitresses in the front make a crappy wage, but the cook in the back makes a better one. Another example are chambermaids, who are the backbone of a hotel's success but they are treated less than and work their butts off. Good for the flight attendances taking action... shame on Sparling, what did this article say, that air north flies up to 20,000 people per month.... do the math....

Joe needs to lighten up a little.
The new union initiative will take some growing pains for all involved. The Air North staff have always been very professional in my opinion. With more benefits they will continue to serve the company well.

Joe, be a little more tolerant and give a little, your company will still do very well.

Good for you Joe. Don't let these unionists bully you. You have the support of most Yukoners on this issue.

Quoting from the Star:

"Geick said the union is always prepared to negotiate."

...but only if they get their way, of course, since anything else "was not going to cut it."
No doubt there are plenty of non-union people who would love to work for Air North as flight attendants.

I am so very saddened to see this job action. Air North has, in my opinion, been one of the few airlines who showed professionalism & sincerely cared about the passengers who flew with them. I understand that some research has been done & their salaries are above what other airlines pay. Air North is a unique airline - offers its customers far more than any other & treats their employees well. Sometimes I disagree with unionizing - this is what happens and nobody wins (in my mind). I still fully support Joe Sparling & hope that he can maintain the standard of services that Yukoners have come to appreciate & expect from Air North.

Typical PSAC behaviour. I think it's time to break this Union. Again I think they are so use to getting their way with the YG they think they are invincible. Their tactics are unprofessional, non collaborative and archaic. They thrive on this form of controversy and would be a very unhappy group if everything was going along smoothly.
I doubt very much if the attendants decided to wear T-shirts on their own. They would have been convinced to do so by the Union...think on your own guys...don't be puppets to your union. They are doing you a huge disservice! You as a collective group have the smarts to negotiate with your employer in good faith! If you have a chance to remove yourselves from the union and continue negotiations on your own you should do so. This is like watching folks get caught up in a cult. You just want to shake them so they snap out of it.
Again, best of luck Joe and for that matter all the flight attendants. I believe you have unwavering support from the public in resolving this soon. One last note to those who chose to remain professional and not wear the offending T-shirts. Good on you! True courage!

Did Mr. Geick just happen to be on the flight? Or did he just take a trip off the backs of the members to watch his little stunt. Either way it's childish and wastes everyone time and money. There needs to be a government watchdog to take these wasteful unions to task. I hate watching these union bullies beat up on Local companies and their own members. These poor flight attendants are being led down a poor path. Killing the company will get you unemployed. Stop following the union propaganda and think for yourselves. They don't have your best interests at heart period.
