An accused pedophile charged with 65 counts appeared in Yukon Supreme Court in Whitehorse via video earlier this week.

The 49-year-old man’s name is banned from publication to protect the identity of the complainants.

He stands charged with 12 counts of sexual assault, 16 counts of sexual interference with a person under the age of 16, 13 counts of making child pornography, 13 counts of possessing child pornography, and 11 counts of voyeurism.

Crown prosecutor Susan Bogle and defence counsel Melissa Atkinson agreed to split the charges into two separate indictments.

This is due to a “significant change to applicable law governing sentencing and procedure” that became effective on July 2, 2008.

One indictment contains charges stemming from alleged incidents that occurred before July 2, 2008 and the second with those that happened afterwards.

The indictments list at least 13 victims under the age of 16.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred between Jan. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2013.

The accused, who is in custody, is due to reappear in court for plea on March 1.

My hope for the victims sake is that this monster pleads guilty. It is hard enough to fall victim and to learn your child has been abused. But to have to go through trial and have your child re-victimized would be horrendous. My thoughts & best wishes for healing for those taken advantage of by this savage.

One year behind bars for each offense could look like justice served to the average citizen. But we the people are not the judge and the jury, otherwise it would be a lynch mob.

We have lived for generations now with the same complaints about our justice systems. When will we realize that this benefits the pedophile and we forget how it affects a community and the person/s that have been abused. if justice is about the Canadian citizens it has to be with the citizens not the lawyers that make it up as we move forward.

The perpetrator's name is not mentioned to protect the victims?!! How about protecting the future potential victims by letting the population know who this paedophile is?

So, they're going to split the charges into two separate indictments. Why bother, if he is found guilty on all, the sentence will just run concurrently anyway. Why waste the court's time? Lets just get it over with and send him away.
